The Wait

The sun has long receded out from the sky,
Pallid gloom invades the wintry air,
Morbid silence hangs over,
Memory sleeps like hibernating toads.

The trees are bare with no leaves to array,
The Earth lies shielded in its icy crust,
There is stillness, the stillness of the grave,
Breaking it, a fox is heard howling afar.

Solitary lies he, in his battered shack,
With a run out lantern throwing pale light,
It burns sending spouts of fume,
Like the last breath of the dying soul.

He listens intent for advancing steps,
Of a long awaited friend, sure to come,
To deliver him of his baneful state,
To row him away across the frozen seas.

Today Is The Only Day

Cry not on flowers wilted,
Count not on buds that canker might blight,
But marvel over beauty blossomed!

Extinct are our Yesterdays,
Illusory are our Tomorrows,
Today is all that exists,
What there is and all there is.
Today is our way up hill
The arena for action decreed
The stage set for the show
The tool and trade for life.

Today well lived leaves -
Every Yesterday
A reminiscence - sweet to relish!
Every Tomorrow
A vision glorious to chase!

Drool not, hence, over yester years

Mother Nature

Nature, thou art God’s creation,
The Benign Mother to all Creation,
Decked in beauty, dressed in glory,
Thou singest hymns to God your Lord.

Bards chant in praise of you,
Sages withdraw to thy silence serene,
Beasts and birds have made you their home,
Men find sustenance and thrive on you,
Dales and Valleys – gems in your crown,
Rivers and Oceans – girdle around your waist,
Dark forests lend you charm,
And deep Ravines spell thy mystery.

Benevolent thou art, still ever malevolent men,
They assault you, they maim and mar,
They suck the life sap – they leave you dry,
They ooze out the blood and cast you dead.

Oh! Pardon us! ! ‘Spare your rod’

Fears

They come,
like hooded serpents from dark holes
with venom in their fangs
ready to snap at.

Like,
Monsters from roaring seas
that rest on the sands
as boulders on a low - lying ledge

Or,
Vampires hurtling down
to suck the blood in the dark
with their outgrown canine teeth

They are,
Wasps swarming around
like embers from a furnace
with poisonous stings, hiding in their tails.

Gulmohur in May

Oh! Behold
The bliss and beauty of May.
The warm sunbeams,
The sudden showers,
The husky wind,
Neither swift nor soft.
The verdure of shrubs
That put forth their buds
And their sweet fragrance
When opening their delicate folds.

Lo! That tree over the hedge,
The lone Gulmohur in full bloom
With flowers cluttered on every bough
And the honey bees, diving in and out.
A red canopy hung
Across the cyan sky!
A marvel of marvels
In the valley of green!
At the slight touch of the wind

Be(u) tter Fly

Your innocent eyes lightly closed
Your tender limbs partly stilled
In swaddling linen's comfort wrapped
You sleep within your mother's girdling arms.

Away from all care you drowse
Away from the snares and sorrows of the world
With the Heaven smiling from the heights
And the swarm of angels keeping guard all around

Fresh as the freshest vernal green
Lovely as the loveliest summer bloom
Soft as the softest silky fleece
You lie, a priceless gift wrapped in grace

Blissful is your rest
Envious is your state
But weep not, when you wake
Bursting this cocoon to the chill and heat

Failure

As we roamed under the star spangled sky,
Sharing many a trivial thought
I failed to voice my clandestine whim
Carefully structured within my mind's alcove

When words got suddenly broken up
With a lump forming in my throat
I failed to convey what I meant
In a language explicit for you to grasp

Gazing at each other, as we stood
Without uttering a word aloud
You failed to notice my saddened eyes
Glistening with tears, about to shed

At the end of a pleasant united jaunt
As our roads diverged in opposite tracks
We failed to say even a parting word
As a gesture of courtesy, due for both

At Times

At times the soul gets clenched
in an unspeakable grief
In a demoniac grip, it chokes and wriggles
The pain of being stung by a dozen scorpions
or hacked piece by piece by an axe
Tremulous grows the heart, over love that is spent
Seeks in vain to revive the joy that is gone
Sprains to lift up the veil that darkens the soul
Wrestles to come out from the desolate cave of black solitude
The more it struggles to wade through the mess
the deeper it plunges into the morass of despair
Clung on talons of excruciating pain,
wailing a long wail of never being understood
the mind goes berserk
whirling and churning.
Anytime the volcano might erupt
emitting fumes of sulphurous smoke
with asphalt lava, spilling out,
blowing life with its violent breath.

A Silent Night, a Holy Night

The sun has set and the shadows fled
The feathered flocks, flown to their nest
Weary men after the day's toil and care
Are back home for sleep and rest

No bird sings and no beast strays
No tramp wanders and no lights shimmer
Silence rules and peace prevails
The sky is clear and the stars do glimmer

Buds unfold in shady glades
A sweet aroma pervades the air
Fluttering leaves sing a lullaby
And glow worms reel on wings of fire

Birds and beasts, in Nature's bosom rest
Babies nap, cuddling to their mothers tight
Tired men stretch out under quilts for ease
The world, asleep with dreams sweet and bright

Arise! Oh Heart

Arise! Oh Heart, from the catacombs of the dead
Shake off the dust, for Life beckons you like a buddy
Peel off the weariness that wraps you like a shroud
And walk to the open to perceive the light.

Arise! Oh Heart, from the dungeons of gloom
The dawn is at your door step, waiting to break
Sing with the koel, merrily warbling in the woods
Dance with the billows, wildly prancing on the deep.

Arise! Oh Heart, from the ghettoes of bondage
Break loose the ropes that moor you to the past
Dart through the panorama of the cerulean blue
And fly high into regions, uncharted and new.

Arise! Oh Heart, from the citadels of hate
Listen not to the shrieking and howling behind
Drink from the goblet of conciliating love
And rejoice at the birth of a dawn with promises galore!
