You Will Never Be Able To Beat The Old Man (Improvisation 09 05 2009)
You will never be able to beat me
At anything I will beat you until
I am too old to win with what I know
when you feel that you are able
to beat me you will lose because
someone else will know that you
will never be able to beat me but
that you take advantage of your
old man be smart now and calm
down and take your medicine and
go on home tonight and get ready
early to bed and dream your dreams
and hope that one day will be your
day to prescribe a young man’s medicine.

When Poems Write Themselves
When poems write themselves
To save good eating for last
They refrigerate desserts but
Set them out a while to ponder
on blocks of delivered ice rapped
In preservative newspapers
Until Just before supper is served
Plates are stacked by older
Siblings the coal is stored
In the indoor shed for the evening
Warmth that is there to keep
Comfort before the blessings and
Bible reading verses are marked
The pages tucked the songs
We sing will themselves sung
From memory or hidden verse
By the unison that remembers
Opening sonnet words but
Drowns in long forgotten lines.

The Rose Within: (Improvisation 03 12 2005)
Rose of resentment within
my hour of flower
in the Lord’s rest to make good
energy of love my winter’s sleep
the petal buds to rose within
my soul with which to keep
like candle lights my face
behind the eyes
not the solitary me
but my rose and I encountered there
indulge them both to speak
the rose resents the hour of flower
the energy of love in that winter’s sleep
I see hidden by the rose lines your face
behind your eye reddened in self respect
nearby the thicket beauty opens out
its energy there before me in greenhouses
knows no hatred source
stands with me to bid farewell
at temple doors I let my spirit sprout

Home From Work At Dark Detroit: Original 10 12 2009
Home from work at dark Detroit
City night invisible front doors
Shut below roof hung welcome light
A burglars forewarning of porches
Raised three steps above entry
Galleries there where beds once kept
They passed away generations
Who gave mulatto sons to raise
And still they slept
Soldiering from monument to monument
Home from work at dark Detroit
They spun the bail impinged upon the
Forest swell sacked the fields and sung
To the pitch of the gospel themes
The sacred geometry of old lines
Of old masters of slaves
Home from work at dark Detroit
The lot is legal and sweetly placed
For the old master still draws
A time phased consciousness frozen

Old New Wise Original 07 23 2010
NEW OLD WISE:
Original 07 23 2010
New: appendages to wing
Torrents on nature’s streaming
River courses and grand parading
Troubadour boulevards and
Evening lady Promenades
Could music proclaim –or silence
The after-hour’s joint red haze
Minstrel melody line for melody
Line -halt momentum mood
Let alone mark time’s waning
Heart’s heartbeat pump spills
Octave fulfilled recital metronome
Old: spiritual gifts ordain
Immortal family strength
We knew to suffer anger
Express spiritual hymnals

The Visitation Of Susie Jo Improvisation 01 24 2009
Spirit discovers harmonies
without solid grounds
duration without frames
and the depth of thoughts
without angels, empty of virtue
discerns then leaves the body
at rest to rise to magnetize to adhere to storms
of the outside mind;
last night Susie Jo attended social gatherings
to present herself as dark chocolate
in her transcendent days of grief,
she wore her black skirt and red vest
her intervention and melatonin plasma
she spoke as radiant…
of her unbelieving period of grief
still lingering behind
her untouchable imminent visits
with uncertainty;
the lender offers a vehicle of death
to take her home again

Loss Entities In Dreams Original 01 26 2011
LOSS ENTITIES IN DREAMS:
Original 01 26 2011
Loss existentialities in dreams faceoff…
Artless object repellant pits dreamer
And the dream face encounter duel
Contentiously sweating loss as the
Peal of desire’s risk to make love
Unprotected –to engage the pipe of
Dreams in sibylline ecstasies induced
By metal and liquid juices that love
Should ferment too for the good of
Finite suspiciousness artless dreams
Desperate for good learn to know inner
Intent and pictured face consistency
Spiritual faces pit the conscience state
Growing out of gardens of object literacy
Weed grows perfectly out of inedible
Content into the toxic climate dwarfing
The slow flowering growth and ambrosia

Nobody's Business If I Do (Origilnal 04 01 2010)
NOBODY’S BUSINESS IF I DO:
Original 04 01 2010
Sing one old song… “This Bitter Earth…”
Nobody’s business if I do
Events surprise in seldom habituated
Innocence –screams aloud that object
Of impulsive fear
Poignant infrequent relationships bedazzling
An obscure Patent Clerk of noble selection
Last never least of many
Ordained head of suitable disciple companies
Esoteric genteel shooting stars indoctrinated
Poll Northerly –sings off key
Rising student nonviolent coordinating
Dimensions on paper charters written for
Free ghetto children breakfasts

LOOKIING AT FAMILY PORTRAITS Original 09 29 2010
LOOKIING AT FAMILY PORTRAITS:
Original 09 29 2010
Looking at family portrait albums
Of days long gone children at play
Party revelers growing old never to tire
Looking at ex-wives as beautiful
No stretch of imagination for
Suspension of belief -see that she is
The set decoration –the lighted stage
A beautiful and black woman glare is like
A quintet of four great jazz musicians
And a sideman –a walk-on drummer
Asleep at the end of every measure
She is a memory to wet the dreams
Of rainy dry Augusts -returns the
Roar to rivers from rainy springs
She is a memory in blank stares
At every vamp
