From Out Of The Dark

It all began when I entered this world,
I was born unable to see.
This meant nothing to a new born child
who accepted life so readily.
My crawling days first introduced to me
the knocks and bumps of reality

Mum and dad were always around
to kiss me better when I fell.
They taught me how to walk the house
without giving injury to myself.
Upstairs and down I walked day or night,
just as though I had normal sight.

Throughout the early years of my life
I was educated by my mother,
but unexpectedly she became pregnant,
with Simon, my baby brother.
Simon’s arrival brought about a change of mind,
which saw me going to a school for the blind.

MY First My Last

It’s quite bizarre what you think about when you’re swimming.
I’m thinking of what I’m doing and Christine from the beginning.
How can I not remember the look she gave me when we first met
and her brilliant friendly smile, oh, how could I ever forget.

When we touched and held hands for the very first time
a thrill went through my body and up and down my spine.
And when I smelled the fragrance of your skin and hair
I wanted to be with you forever no matter what, or where.

I thought your soft lips were going to melt when we first kissed
oh, I can taste them now and their touch is so painfully missed.
You turned me inside out and I needed to be as one with you
I wanted the souls of our body to be connected, and I still do.

Wherever we kissed you tasted so perfect and I wanted more and more
you made my heart beat so fast and loud you could hear it I’m sure.
And whenever you were unhappy your sadness made me unhappy too
I tried to make you laugh or smile, so the sun would shine through.

The Knowledge Of The Prophesies

For some days now I’ve found it impossible
to stop strange voice in my head.
It’s been telling me about the future of this planet
and to listen carefully to what is said.

It asks me questions to which I know nothing
and of course I can’t reply,
not just because I don’t know the answers,
but people are always close by.

I don’t want to give the impression
that I’m losing my mind and senses.
I have to think about my position in life
and consider all the consequences.

I need time alone to think and evaluate
whether I am really hearing a voice,
and if I am, what does this really mean,
and is it giving me any kind of choice.

The Legend Of Dream

A journalist asked me if I knew anything about the boy named Dream,
and how he became the greatest legend that the world had ever seen.
I was the mid-wife, so I’ve known Dream since the day he was born
he was delivered inside a bubble and the skin was whole and untorn.

This handsome boy had golden hair and the most beautiful blue eyes,
but he had a growth upon his shoulders and this made his mother cry.
She asked if it could be removed, so he would be accepted by everyone,
and I told her that it could, and by the age of seven it should be done.

However, after two weeks his mother took him to see a top Paediatrician
who had Dream x-rayed, he later told her of his diagnosis and decision.
Her son’s problem was that he had wings beneath his skin on his shoulders,
which should be allowed to form and grow naturally until he’s older.

And because he was so unique she should send him to a special school
where she could stay whilst he was taught and treated as an individual.
Dream’s mother accepted his proposal and they moved away from the city,
she wrote to me regularly and I visited them as a friend, and not out of pity.

The Ouija Board

In Holmewood a quiet mining village in North Derbyshire
where the terraced houses were still owned by the mine.
There lived a young ex-miner with his wife and children,
and Dennis the father hadn’t worked for sometime.

Concrete floors were laid downstairs because of subsidence,
they had no curtains, carpets, television, or hi-fi.
All their money went on rent, food, and paying bills,
Vera was unhappy, but Dennis couldn’t understand why.

She wanted to move away from the village to Derby,
where opportunities knocked on every ones door.
But Dennis was accustomed to the hardships of mining
and moving away didn’t have the same draw.

He always persuaded Vera that things would get better
and a kiss and cuddle covered his incompetence.
All his ex-miner cronies were in the same boat,
and working for a living to him made no sense.

The Tree

In an English forest on Nottingham’s Sherwood National Park
stood a large wide oak tree probably as old as the Ark.
Oddly enough I had never seen this old proud tree before,
it sort of pulled me to it, as though it wanted me to explore.

I slowly walked around the trunk and looked closely at the tree
admiring its form, its wrinkled bark, every inch fascinated me.
My fingertips touched its bark and felt its rugged texture and shape,
it seemed so alive, and I was overwhelmed for heavens sake.

The sturdy trunk appeared to be expanding and growing ever wide,
then I thought I heard a child’s voice coming from deep inside.
Against the deeply wrinkled bark I placed my hands and ear,
just in case by some strange chance a voice I really did hear.

It seems as though I heard nothing so I gradually stepped away,
as I did the tree trunk looked as if to shrink, shudder and sway.
I rubbed my eyes in disbelief; I couldn’t believe what I’d seen
I reached out and touched it to make sure it wasn’t a dream.

Robin Hood

Now here’s the tale of a Derbyshire boy by the name of Robin Dean
who was born near to Buxton where the hills are so green.
His parents struggled to find enough food to feed their family,
so Robin and his brothers stole food regularly.

The gaunt looking Robin was caught stealing at the age of ten
and was sentenced to a life of servitude in the Hall at Elvasten.
He scrubbed floors, washed pots and pans, and cleaned cutlery,
but he dreamed of becoming the Earl’s Master of Archery.

At the age of twelve years he had to learn the ways of the land
and the gamekeeper made sure he was a reliable hand.
Before long he became a maker of longbows and arrows
he then as an archer won prizes at county shows.

King Richard asked his noblemen for men to fight the crusades,
he wanted the best archers and those who could swing blades.
Robin Dean was equipped and sent to fight the Lion Heart’s cause
he became honoured in battle, and won the King’s applause.

Once In A Lifetime

"I know I'm a down and out, wet and freezing cold,
but what do you want from one who feels so old.
Go away, leave me alone, so I can get some sleep
and maybe with luck God will my soul keep.

What do you want? I've got nothing at all for you,
even my aching body is aged and worthless too.
Maybe you're a Samaritan here to do me a good turn?
Oh go away, I'm too old to change or learn."

"What would you say if I could make you well again,
give you a younger body free from pain? "
"Do you think I'm mad or are you completely insane,
who do you think you are to make such a claim? "

"I am not an empty vessel; I only say what I can do,
and I will help you, but you have to help me too.
Ah, I see you're thinking… well, what do you say old man?
No one else can offer this, there's only me that can?

Just Over a Year Ago

The city council decided to demolish
the relatively new centre of education.
The building was way beyond repair
because of dangerous subsidization.

A new housing estate would be built
upon stronger, deeper foundations.
Sited next to the river and park land
the estate would be a prime location.

The contract builders soon moved in
and marked out the entire site.
Services and infrastructure were in place
and the pile drivers worked day and night.

As the houses were being completed
they were sold and families moved in.
The last section of land was made ready
for the pile driving machine to begin.

The Price Of A Soul

“I know I’m a down and out, wet and freezing cold,
but what do you want of me, a man who feels so old.
I’m so tired; just leave me alone so I can get some sleep
and with luck God will my soul safely keep.

Tell me what you want! I’ve got nothing to give you,
no money, no jewellery, and my body is worthless too.
Or are you a Good Samaritan here to give me money?
Oh, go away; you can’t do anything for me.”

“What if I could do something for you, like make you well again
and make you feel younger and fitter, and free from all your pain?
Because I’m the kind of guy who has the power to do this for you,
if you promise to do something for me; just the odd thing or two.

Well, I can see that you’re thinking.., what do you say old man?
No one else will make you this offer, there’s only me that can?
If you turn me down you’ll be dead anyway in a very short time.
What’ve you to lose? Give me a reason, why should you decline? ”
