Somebody ' Fictitious

Poetic Form: Envelope Couplet

Somebody set my heart afire,
Somebody filled me with desire.
I cannot speak his name today
It's a secret ~ hidden away!
Someone took me higher and higher
Somebody set my heart afire.

Somebody set my heart afire;
A handsome man, I still admire.
Once he asked me to 'name the day'
I couldn't. What would husband say?
'Twould be treachery, love for hire.
Somebody set my heart afire.

Somebody set my heart afire,
and I was sinking into the mire,
Mad about him ~ I told him so,
But this was many years ago.

It All Happens Tomorrow in Britain

Poem posted
Saturday
25 October 08.

I respect an old familiar phrase:
'Spring forward ~ and Fall back'
This never ceases to amaze.
I recall it from my younger days,
Now, nothing do I lack.
For like an old sweet melody
Staying forever in memory,
It returns once more to rescue me.
And changing the clocks has to be.

In Britain, the hand of time slips back
At 'two' on Sunday morning.
No need to leave a cosy bed
I change the hand of time ahead
Of turning off the little side light
And tomorrow, my life will be intact

There's Always Tomorrow

Top Model, actress and glamour girl
with a lovely smile just like a pearl
walked through Paris quite elegantly
with Scarlett O'Hara propensity.
Admiring glances flew quite freely on
the Avenue of the Champs Elysees.
But her feminine charm soon did wane
and had 'gone with the wind' and the rain.

Droplets fell down her beautiful face
mascara became a frightful disgrace;
those brunette locks were straggly
and wet - not one sweet glance
did she beget. Oh what humility
descended that morn on Scarlet O'Hara
lost and forlorn. But a voice from within
said secretly 'There's always tomorrow'
.......... 'fiddle-de-dee'..........

Gone Fishing

Sylvia searched the whole house over
Calling out her lover's name...
He was not there, oh no ~ oh no,
He was hooked on the fishing game.

Down to the water he had gone,
Whether the sport was right or wrong!
The river was his hideaway,
So peaceful, on a warm summer's day.

Sweet Sylvia disliked the hobby,
Thought the fish could feel the pain.
She saw them struggle for their freedom
But Sylvia would never complain.

Now to wait three hours, or more.
Until that key turned in the door,
And he would greet his Sylvia dear
All laden down with his fishing gear.

Because 'We Believe

The name of 'God' is ever sacred
One name, beyond compare.
The Idol and the Mentor
Deep in our minds, the name is there.

God is comfort to the lonely
When no human seems to care;
without His name all hope would fail
the world would sink beyond repair.

The word of God gives us strength
to cope each long day through
how could we doubt life's wonder
of the Rock of Ages ever true.

We read the myths and stories
we can call Him by another name.
'Nature' said a boy of nine...
There is a connection, all is divine.

The Way To My Heart

Authors: Joyce Hemsley
and John William McGrath.
National Poetry Day, tomorrow
9th October 2008...

Poetry and gentle breezes
forever go together
from a sunny day in May
until the glory of September.

I feel I am a solitary cloud
floating over Holy ground;
summertime and nature's bounty
spin my world around.
In early morning's light of day
our poems shine with colour,
the whirlwind of true romance
makes them sparkle as no other.
And in the beauty of your face

A Light Seems to Shine

He loved me well ~ I loved him too
His melodies of love were all for me.
And into his arms I always flew
Whenever he smiled upon me.
We danced and danced the night away
In the moonlight before our wedding day.

Dancing belongs to the days of old,
The beautiful springtime before he died.
Without my 'Ken' the nights grew cold
Yearnings and longings multiplied.
I cried and I cried each night away
Recalling our beautiful wedding day.

With forty long years here in my heart
I am still his, and he is still mine.
We kept our vows 'Till death us do part'
And as I write, a light seems to shine
Inviting me to a life on cloud nine
A life of sweet music, roses and wine.

Playing 'Top Host

Humour intended:

I invited a close friend to dine with me
then to play golf, returning for tea.
The day was fine, no cloud in the sky
so the culinary items I decided to buy.

I purchased a joint of fine sirloin steak
and yorkshire puddings I would bake;
plenty of vegetables cooked just right
with rosemary sauce as an added delight.

A favourite sweet ~ peaches and cream
fitted the menu like a splendid dream!
My table was laid as the clock struck one
and with much relief the cooking was done.

Now...that expected knock on the door;
my friend had arrived to goodies galore,
but as I was just set to play the 'top host'

Threefold

Poet Edward Lear introduced
the 'nonsense' five-line limerick
into Britain many years ago;
I quote one by Edward himself
followed by two Starlite Cafe
Poets.

One ~ Edward Lear:
There was a young lady whose eyes
Were unique as to colour and size
When she opened them wide
People all turned aside
And started away in surprise.

Two ~ John William McGrath:
There once was a man from Kentucky
Who thought that life was just ducky
Wherever he'd go
He'd put on a show
Making everyone feel they were lucky.

Pretty Whitehaven

Whitehaven, Britain, on the
Banks of the Mersey
Steeped in Industrial history...
Not 'The Fog on the Tyne is All Mine'
But Mersey sunshine makes
Whitehaven divine.

Where north-west breezes blow
Whitehaven Harbour lights are aglow.
And the pretty Cumbrian town
Lives on, recalling coalfields of
Long ago, when imported tobacco
Was the status quo.

'Ferry Cross The Mersey' -
A popular song; this song worldwide
Could do no wrong! Jerry and the
Pacemakers turned up the heat
Whilst The Beatles & Rolling Stones
Turned on the beat.
