Prayer for Our Nurses

Lord, be with all those women
who, in Your name, freely chose
their noble lives of daily sacrifice,
dispensing, in the name of Christ,
Your grace and mercy, caring for
their helpless, ill or dying fellow
human beings, while counting not
their own discomfort, pain or care.
Dear Lord, please bless them all...
Amen.

God's Poetry

To give and gratefully respond
to beauty, love and tenderness,
to lose yourselves, but gain
a truer, greater and, finally,
a timeless new identity...

To share in life-long voluntary bond
the precious rhymes and rhythms of life,
the surging tides of joy and pain,
the laughter and the tears,
the bitter and the sweet...

You must, together, read every stanza
that God, our Masterpoet wrote
for you, dear bride and groom, to live!

Tower of Baghdad

One day, an angel will appear and take
those cool dark glasses from your eyes,

on which you built your royal tower,
in tribute to yourself...

And then, perhaps, you'll understand
and, trembling, bow your head
and, weeping, see your mighty tower tumble.
Like all man's monuments to man,
it once must crash, its concrete crumble,
its dust be scattered by the winds
And never will you build again
upon mere sand...

Nude on A Bearskin

NUDE ON A BEARSKIN

The three of us were having lunch together,
my mom, myself and the young lady

We chatted about the dishes on the menu,
the latest tennis and soccer game results,
the weather, and the war.

I knew my mom's great sense of humor, and
her surprising timing of the practical jokes
she liked to play on us, her children.

But then, she suddenly asked the lady, smiling,
if she would like to see a picture
of m e in the n u d e....

I thought poor Mom had lost her mind,
and all that I could utter was a whispered,
