Valsa George

The Sea in Motion

Turbulent moves the water mass
Thumping and roaring as it rolls,
Sheltering in her, myriad queer forms
From tiny planktons to giant killer whales.

Constant remains she, yet changing ever
The puzzling paradox beyond the land
She had cradled the first mote of life
Earliest link in the incessant chain of life.

Whipped by the wind, smashed by the storm
She lashes on the rock in angry venom
In tumult she pounds the strand
As though her fury is never assuaged

At times seen sedate in shades of blue
So compliant - without stir, without din
Tranquil she lies - an appeased child
With a calm, unmatched in her prior demeanour

Reunion

After several summers, we met again
In the still slumbering morning light
Looking at each other in dazed silence
With the delectable kick of an evanescent dream.

The vile tricks Time had wrought
Did change both you and me
In the place of dimpled ruddy cheeks
Dreamy eyes and soft creamy skin
I saw crumpled, saggy face
Lustreless eyes and wrinkled skin.

Much has slipped between the seams!

How I watched you struggle hard
To hide the shock far too obvious
When your eyes had hooked on me
Altered beyond your wild surmise
Gazing at each other, dumb we stood
Two travellers at a wayside inn

Supplication

Darkness descends
And the destination lying far behind
God! This supplication I do make
Give me Light, clear brilliant light!
Not to enjoy the wayside scenes
But that I shall not stumble and fall

I ask Thee,
The wisdom to discern the Truth
For here, Truth is ever beguiled
Luscious smiles and sugary talks
Wrap the plots of devious schemes

I ask Thee,
The prudence to escape the snares
Laid by wolves in lambs' clothing
Behind the profuse praises of men
Lie the sneering taunts that wound
Beneath the velvety paws remain
The sharp piercing claws that cut.

Oh! Green, Stay Green!

In the brilliant spectrum of rainbow hues,
Oh, Green! Thou art a ravishing shade.

You glow and fade in distant skies,
You hide beneath the oceans deep,
You make the Earth so cheery to live,
You ward off famine and assure wealth,
You signal movement and ensure health,
You sooth the eyes and cool the hearts.

In the brilliant spectrum of rainbow hues,
Oh, Green! Thou art a ravishing shade.

Green is the garb; God gave the Earth to wear,
Green is the harbinger of blooming spring,
Green – the forests that is home to beasts,
Green – the meadows, where the cattle graze,
Green – the prairies that stretch afar,
Green – the lawns that adorn the homes,
Green – the tuft of grass that grows beneath,

Dust unto Dust

The briny tears have dried
The sounding knells are stilled
The grieving crowd, dispersed
The parting pain, allayed

Benumbed lie the dead
Beneath the marble vaults
Bereft of power and prowess
Benighted and beaten.

The sun shall never cast its glorious rays
The stars shall never their brilliance shed
The breeze never shall bring tidings new
The showers shall no more drench them through

A thoughtful friend sometimes seen around
A fervent prayer at times chanted aloud
A plaited wreath, rarely laid over
A trite rite, randomly carried out

The Beaten Track

Lying in a trance on a rocking chair,
In the living room of my quiet home,
The buzzing sound of a fretful bee,
Woke me up from my pleasant reverie.

Again and again the droning hiss,
Fell faintly in my vacant ear.
It came so close from the window sill,
Fastened tight with glass shutters.

On looking up, I chanced to glance,
A little fly that reeled around,
Trying in vain to find its way,
Through the narrow slit, into the open sky.

For the poor insect trapped inside,
It was all a matter of live or die,
Again and again it beat so hard,
Against the glass window that lay ajar.

Deliverance

The spring dawned after the biting chill,
Beams of sunlight filtered down,
Flakes of snow melted away,
And the whole world bathed in brilliant glow.

He came,
The dainty Darling of our dreams!
With promises full and hopes in store,
To fill the void,
within our souls.
To burst the silence,
with clatter of sounds.
To dispel the gloom,
that hovered on.

High from Heaven,
like a cherubim sent,
with the glow of umpteen candles lit,
He came,
To gladden our doleful hearts,

Transition

The air was sultry
as the sun stood,
a blazing ball of fire, overhead.
Streams of sweat trickled through
every pore of the skin.
Sheets of light, like waves of water
glistened across the road.

The sky, suddenly into a violent rage, flew.
Dark mass of clouds, driven by the wind
went scurrying from West to East.
A dark shroud, across the sky
from end to end was spread.
The Sun stood veiled behind the penumbra of gloom.
The trees arched convex by the hard pull of the air.
And the heavens started weeping, wailing and roaring
darting gleams of light with fluorescent rays.
Thunder boomed and bounced as boulders,
falling over tin roofs.
Twigs and boughs went flying

Nature's Fury (The Deluge)

As the month of June draws near,
Summer loosens its fiery grip,
Cool blows the wind, sweeping the humid air,
And dark clouds gather in distant skies.

Sound of thunder falls in rumbling notes,
Flash of lightning sears the sky,
Soon comes the sound of falling rain,
Pitter - Patter, it falls on roofs and walls.

Rain has come after a scorching spell,
Bathing the Earth in splendid shower,
It washes the leaves in sparkling green,
And fills up every pond and well.

Fishes dance in winding streams,
Frogs croak in pools of green,
Children play with paper boats,
Puddle or pool, they hardly care.

The Calm before the Storm

Far across the sea, I watched a blazing hue,
And my eyes feasted on the brilliance of the setting sun.
Beside me, the lulled sea moved on and on,
Like a bird on wings that dives and soars.

A cool breeze flitted across my face,
Like the caressing touch by the Beloved's hands,
I watched the clouds that trailed along,
Hanging a canopy over the azure sky.

Below my feet, lay the sandy shore,
Extending miles on end to infinite lengths,
I lay on it with my arms out stretched,
And my mind lost in the maze of unending thoughts.

I brooded over the mysteries still hidden to man,
Yearning to peer into caverns, the ocean hid.
Struck by a sense of awe, I reposed,
While my gaze fixed on the firmament of stars.
