Valsa George

Cancer Ward

Life, here hangs on a filmy thread of hope
Unskilled acrobats, making tight rope walks
With the deep chasm gaping below
Some too fatigued to feel the stress,
Empty beds bearing
the scars of lost battles,
Shaded rooms brooding in the gloom,
Pervading silence speaking mutely
of burnt hopes and dreams,
the morbid stillness occasionally broken by
stifled groans and whimpers.

In a corner room, he lay,
a dead heap upon the bed,
with no one to keep vigil,
Loneliness, his only companion!
Crowds of fans queued up once
to have just a glimpse of him!
Now suddenly grown older
with all energy vanquished,

When Poetry Haunted Me

Sudden was the descent of poetry on me
I tottered under its weight
My body heated up like the sun
A frying egg yolk on the pan
My blood started burning…. burning
A strange madness crept across my senses
Intoxicated as by an excess dose of ale
Or drunk with the vintage wine
Or by some mystical disengagement
I started levitating
Wings sprouted up suddenly on my sides
I reeled round and round
Flew up and up
Meteors flashed past
Stars blinked
Larger celestial bodies stood still
Strange sounds fleeted past my ears
My heart palpitated,
Like the rumblings of thunder
My eyes glowed like fire balls

A Sudden Downpour

Rain beats down on the window pane
As the flood gates of Heaven suddenly open
It is pouring out in torrential flow
Like a Reservoir, all at once, broken

It has come down as a welcome respite
To fan away the humid sweltering heat
It falls in drops and flows in rivulets
Washing the dust of summer drought

With a sudden burst from the weight laden clouds
It lashes down in steam and fury
Plummeting to form ripples in puddles
And filling pools and ponds in hurry

In slanting sheets, it almost pounds
Flooding roads and making puddle
Gushing through pipes and rushing down drains
Water floods, causing men to waddle

By the Side of a Brook

On the bank of a rushing brook
I sat for hours watching its course.
Peered into the clear gurgling mass
That cascaded down from a mountainous source

Like a slithering snake, it slinks and slips
It babbles downhill night and day
Rolling and gliding thro plains and dales
It winds its way to the wider bay.

Dipping my fingers in its icy chill
How my hand got repelled as from a shock
In the ripples stirred by the kissing breeze
I saw trees, clouds and the jutting rock-

All floating in queer, fanciful shapes,
Shuddering, trembling and standing still
And the fishes leaving zigzag trails,
Swishing and swimming in the winding rill.

The Daybreak

The distant mountains gleam and glitter
With the sun rising in all his glory
The world awakes to songs and sounds
And takes up all its chores so cheery

The green woods echo the song of birds
Poured in strains of sweet melody
The silvery rills that run through dales
Sizzle and simmer in neat prosody

Birds that leave their nocturnal haunts
Dart to heaven's measureless bounds
Shepherds lead their docile flock
To graze on grassy mountain heights

The spotted deer and the white hare
Come out from their close covert
On the meadows and over the plains
They nibble the grass and run about

Circus Clown

Suddenly from somewhere
A street urchin-
An untamed bird of the wider sky
Dropped down
Into the circus tent
Before him was unfurled
Scenes eerie….awesome! !
Roaring lions and tigers,
Gibbering baboons, caravans of camels,
Animal tamers and acrobats,
Artists balancing on poles
Swinging from bars to trapeziums
Pliant girls with plastic limbs
And pouting breasts,
Walking on tight ropes
A queer world
Peopled with beasts and men!

His face, painted white and red
In motley dress, he was arrayed

What They Say!

They say….
She comes,

When gusts of wind whistle and boom
And the boughs of trees shake and rattle
When the lilts of a doleful song
Come floating through the desert air
And waves on waves of enticing strain
Percolate through the silent gloom
When all at once, a foggy mist
Blurs the sight and folds the Earth

They say….
She comes,

Gliding from the southern wild
Out from a mysterious hide
With a heady perfume swooning the sense
Her white dress trailing the dust
Her wavy hair lying loose

The Cosmic Orchestra

With the break of dawning day,
The feathered folks greet the world,
In resonant notes of alluring songs,
They fill the hearts with rapturous glee.

Far or near a church bell sings,
Vibrant notes of chiming verse,
It floats around in rambling waves,
Urging the world to wake and work.

On fluttering wings the gentle breeze,
Comes down, to tickle the tender leaves,
Together do they sing and dance,
In delightful chorus to thrill the hearts.

Later sometime the falling rain,
Sings a song in rhythmic notes,
With rising strains and falling lilts,
The music goes on high and low.

Twilight Broodings

Sitting alone on the river bank
In the fast fading amber light
My eyes glanced across the flowing river
To the other side, on my right

Neon bulbs have begun flickering here n' there
On the far fringes of the sprawling city,
As fire flies clustering in dozens
Making the night look so pretty

With what vigor and gripping zest
The city has woken up, never to rest
And hordes of people, unmindful of any
Move briskly along the crowded street

Where do this stirring throng advance
When there descends the long pawed night
It leaves one to wonder, if it's man's lot
To be ever in motion without halt

To the Singing Lark

Oh! How like you, I long to be a singing lark
Who among the fleecy clouds, like a tiny speck
Remains hidden, drowning the air with music sweet
Rising higher and darting up with movements quick and slick

In our ears falls your song like peals of chiming bells
In clear, crystalline notes on this radiant day so bright
Why do you stay unseen in the far fringes of heaven?
Oh! Come out from the veils that cover you from our sight!

Are you warbling of love in inextricable lays
Or chanting hymns to the God of greater heights
Diving up and down like a mysterious sprite
Are you trilling of the charms of enchanting sights

Soaring and swaying like a flitting dot of light
You ascend higher and higher to dizzier heights
I guess your wings brush against the sailing clouds
As you reel round and round in ecstatic flights
