Snow Like Horses
The world is filling up with snow.
Blowing and sticking
To everything
And hoofprints appear
Pounding the ground hard and icy
Howling wind
Like whinnying horses
Tossing their heads
Snow like hair
Grooming
Snow like hair like Kelly
The world is filling up with snow
And her eyes are my light
When even she can't see
She is a rock
No one can weather
Bigger
Stronger
Protection
Go ne.

I'm On Fire
Sparks are flying and I'm on fire.
I can't see through the smoke and I'm on fire.
I can't breath, I can't think
Because I'm on fire.
It hurts but it's warm and it's beautiful
You're feeding my fire
My fire of love
And I'm burning alive
And I'm loving everything about you
From how you make me feel to the flames glowing around me
But you're killing me in this heat
Can't you understand that fire is wonderful and terrible?
Can't you save me from falling further under the flames' embrace?
Can't you see I'm on fire?

Roses and Dreams
Swinging from a tree in the middle of the sky
Catching a star
Holding it tight
Kicking at clouds passing far below
A rose clutched in my hand
The moon a reflection of my happiness
Letting my balloon float away
Dropping my rose
Swinging out
Like a shooting star
Glowing in the night
My head in the clouds
Dreaming my dreams
Falling with my rose
Falling with the rain
Flapping my wings and rising into the air
Swooping away holding my rose
Bursting through the clouds
Breaking up the rainbow
Settling on my swing

Parts of Hearts
My heart is falling apart
It's not strong, strong enough
It's been broken too, too many times
Been stitched back together
But it's coming, co-coming undone
Breaking again along the scar lines
Pieces, pieces falling into oblivion
My heart's falling, falling, falling apart
Fix me
Save me
My heart has fallen apart
Pieces scattered in the wind
My heart is bleeding and beating
And beating and beating
And bleeding for you
My heart's fallen for you
Fluttering, trembling, butterflies when you're near
But you've never even looked at me

Babylon Candle
I see your smoke curling up
your tiny flame trembles
black in the center
I smile
what heat can you bring?
can you light my way?
what lies in the shadows
just outside my pool of light?
I will not be frightened
I promise
maybe curious
I will creep and tip-toe and sneak in the night
you my only light
dripping
waning
waxing
melting, hot and liquid
light my path
that I will tread
till my hardy light goes out

Losers
This is an ode to lives of quiet desperation
To life
At its lamest
When she lives paycheck to paycheck
And he hides his ache in tired smiles and his kids will never know
When they cry every night when shouts fill the kitchen and their family threatens to crumble at the seams
And she ignores the giggles as she approaches because she pretends they can't break her but they've already broken her smile
He didn't tell his friends he has leukemia because he wants to be normal and having a friend who's dying is much too hard
And who can blame him
You know nothing about the losers in your life because you never cared to ask
But sometimes her broken smiles are more precious than anything

Cookie Crumbs
Cookies will save the world.
Cookies have saved the world.
Thirteen of them landed on the moon
They called them the Apollo 13 of cookies
Chocolate Chip built the pyramids
And Macadamia painted the Sistine Chapel
The Nile runs with milk
Because the sun is an Oreo
And the sun is the Nile's favorite
Favorite cookie
Superman defeated no one
Super Sugar Cookie did all that
Double Chocolate Jackie Robinson
Was the first Afro-American to play baseball in the majors

Thoughts of Rain
Thoughts of rain
And kings of old
Queens all gone
They fade away
Like shooting stars
And others calling ‘Don’t jump! ’
But I did
I’ll take the free fall
I’m taking the chance that no one will be there to catch me
And while I fall I think
Beautiful, wonderful thoughts of rain
And pretty things
The ones that weren’t smashed in the fight
The things that fell and didn’t jump
But I did
Free falling
A long way down
What happened to the zebra?
Stripes all faded off
What happened to the giraffe?

Theme for World Lit
The instructor said,
Go home and write
A page tonight.
And let that page come out of you—
Then, it will be true.
Write about culture
She said
About heritage
About home
About you.
But who am I?
Is this where I'm supposed to figure it out?
What is my culture?
I am Africa
And oceans I've flown across
I am beaches I've walked on
Mountains I've climbed
And cultures I've spoken to

Tin Heart
Twenty five soldier boys standing in a line
Twenty five army toys made out of tin
But the last one was broken
Unfinished
Missing a leg
And he stood the straightest
Of them all
His line stood straight
Eyes facing forward
But our one legged soldier
Looked toward the doll house
She was a ballerina
He was a soldier boy
And he loved her
At night the toys come out to play
But our steadfast little soldier
Just longed for the ballerina
