Scarlett Treat

Lollipop Woman

The man's skin
catches the light,
reflected desire
shining in his eyes.

I approach
awkardly,
gingerly,
gleefully.

It's as though
he's a lollipop
and I am starved
for candy.

I See (Revised/Reposted)

I see
Death
Lurking
In their eyes....

There on the battlefields
That have a thousand names...
Iwo Jima, San Juan Hill,
Wounded Knee, Gettysburg,
London, Belfast,
Berlin, Africa, Jerusalem,
Viet Nam, Iraq....
The tide never stops....

And I see
Death
Lurking
In their eyes.

The House Beside The Road

The house beside the road,
Where people lived
And children played,
Is empty now
And falling down.

The echos of happy feet
Are heard now,
Tapping to the sound
Of Poppy's fiddle,
But the house beside the road
Is empty.

When a gentle voice
Is heard in the house,
It's only a singing breeze
Sifting itself through
The cracks in the roof of
The house beside the road.

Time Passes, Faces Change, The Heart Remains The Same

The face I see
In the looking glass
Is not the face I see
In my heart.

The woman I see
In the mirror now
Is not the girl I see
In my heart.

The face I see
In the looking glass
Is lined with the cares
Of the world,

The hair is silver,
The eyes dimmed,
The face is aged,
And the mouth is thin.....

Together Apart

We're together...
But apart!
Together in body,
Apart in heart.

We have grown
Out of the love
Which we had
At the start.

Only the children
Hold us together,
And the lives
We live each day.

But when you lie beside me,
In our cold bed at night,
We just lie there, together, apart,
And nothing is right.

Frozen In Time

The shutter focused, and clicked...
And the memory became forever mine,
Frozen in time,
Remembered forever,
Lost never.

Her scarlet lips
So very gently touched,
Nay, Kissed, the green apple,
And with a crisp pop,
Her pearly white teeth
Took a bite!

So forever,
Her lips,
The scarlet color
Imbedded in memory,
The apple,
So green and crisp
The juice flew when pierced,

Still Night

In the still night,
In the deepest, darkest night,
Where there is no night....
Monsters lurk.

In the still night, where
Not even a streetlight cast shadows,
Where there is no moonlight...
Monsters lurk.

In the still night,
in the darkest night,
Under the sheltering trees...
Monsters lurk...

For where there is no light,
In the deepest, darkest night
Where there's not even candlelight,
Monsters lurk!

Day of Grief

Day is...
Day is not...
The sun
Continues to rise...
And set...
Only to rise again.

Life goes on...
Day in...
Day out...
And yet, somewhere,
Buried deep in my soul,
The tears continue
To fall,

And the pain goes on,
Always and ever,
For those lost souls
Of September 11,
And for the loss

Older Than Time

Older than time,
I have been around, always,
To light up your life.

Your eyes glittered and shown
As my light was reflected there,
Making them sparkle
On your very first date.

I was there
When you dined
And danced the night away
With the man you loved,
The man of your dreams.

I was there
The day you wed,
To light your way
Down the aisle,
Straight into

A Southern Narrative

The tired old farm buildings
Were slumping into the ground
Like exhausted children,
Fighting to stay upright,
But too old, too tired
To try much longer.

Possibly, the only thing
Holding them vertically
Was the amount of vines
Sprouting out the tops
Of the tilting roofs.

Doors gaped wide,
Hinges hanging away,
Most of their screws missing,
Holding bits and pieces
Of the stout planks
Which used to make doors.
