The Faerie Queen and Her Many Heartaches
Tamed by no man
Broken by their swords instead
What brave men who think
That which we cannot capture,
We shall destroy.
Do you think me a butterfly?
Pin back my wings and arms and
Mount me behind glass on the wall
Like Christ on the cross.
I told you I trusted you
How foolish I was
To think
To believe
You wouldn’t hurt me
And yet here I hang
Your butterfly pinned
It’s a good thing the glass is so thick
My thin cries would break the heart
You do not have.

Die, My Darling
Die, my darling
A whispered warning
Of horrors in your mind
Die, my lover
I will discover
The treachery of your kind
Down, my sweet
Fall at my feet
My judgement lies in wait
Down, my heart
The time to part
Has come to us too late
Sleep, my treasure
A bitter pleasure
Like honey-sweetened wine
Sleep, my precious
A kiss so vicious
When vengeance will be mine

Let's Talk About War
Let’s talk about war
We’ll discuss Tennyson
And Brooke
Owen
And Sassoon
How simple life seems
When the sun blazes
The girls are wearing skirts and sunglasses
The scent of summer in the air
We’ll talk about the different wars
And the poets who fought with pens
A distraction occurs in the form
Of a woodpecker
Beating away at a drainpipe
April names it Woodpecker
April names it Pecky
It’s hard to think, miles away,

Cirque
Alone in a dark room
A figure sits
A woman
A girl
Bedraggled hair
White face
Red lips
Scarred
Arms crossed over her chest
X
Clasping each shoulder
Lightly
As though afraid to touch
One hand shakes
Quivers
All she can hear is
Razor blades over a violin
Screech
Her hair is wrinkled
Wet

A Solstice Dance
Drums are pulsing in echoes of darkness
When the sun sinks low and the music plays
The hillsides dotted with lighted bonfires
And figures that leap around the blaze
I can see in the shimmering darkness
My brethren dance into ecstasy
Flames are bounding higher and higher
With my pagan kind surrounding me
Sky-clad sisters with candles and lanterns
Our voices rising into the night
A thousand bodies and souls united
When we are blessed with the second sight
I can see in the glimmering darkness
My sisters dance into ecstasy
Drums are beating louder and louder
As shadows of the old year surround me
