Rough Diamond
Who made that first cut
aiding nature
to show her stature
brilliance of light
reflected in colours of delight
Rough diamond
prism of marriage bond

Are you ever so happy
Are you ever so happy
you want the day
to spread into eternity
Are you ever so happy
you look at the soil
and see it grows flowers in your eyes
Are you ever so happy
you want the universe
to collapse into you
Are you ever so happy
you feel your heart
contains all of heaven
That's what love does
And all creation lives in you
Merry Christmas, Helena

The last of the sunny-sides-up
'Twas your birthday
the sixtyfifth
March twentytwo
retirement too
Morning came
living love aflame
breakfast the game
I asked, with teeth holding flower
What should it be, dear
sunny-side-up, your answer
and I was gripped with fear
cracked the egg
into the pan
and waited
for sun-up ripening
yolk still running

What is it you're saying
What is it you're saying
that anyone
who looks like you
attracts me
and I say
why not
but you say
she can't be like me
She may look like me
but her mind
is not my mind
her laughter
is not my laughter
her fevers
not my fevers
and more

In The Streams Of Your Eyes
what a life we’ve had
and have
time immeasurable in times so limited
and all the earth melts into a spot
my spotless joy grows gardens uncountable
woody hibiscus nestles gardenias
creation anew on wedding anniversary
the universe basks in your eyes
nature’s masterpiece swirls therein
the rainbow in dance adorns your brow
drums triumphant leap on your eyelids
anoint my soul
render me fluid
in the streams of your eyes

From The Terrace
White house
brown roof
windows with outsretched arms
speak to my eyes
urging acceptance
Walls lift roof to gray sky
breeze flowing through the columns
floor, not for walking
but for ascending
request my steps
to be uplifted
Arches curve upwards
and downwards
dancing like the waves
invite me to join
all is in place
all agog with excitement

Will you marry me
Seven years old in primary school
1944 up and running
and you in diapers one year on milk
1943 gave us your eyes
What if you I tell you I don’t know sums
and ran from whipping from teacher so furious
can’t stand a boy strange to addition
division too complex for hoarding mind
Ran away to escape the whip
spent the hours in hiding far from home
unknown to dad with a bigger cane for truant son
teacher and father in perfect agreement
What if I came and said, marry me
tattered running nose and all divided
don’t add up to much can’t multiply
would you take me in as you do now

Come in enter the poem
why stand there like an iceberg out of sorts
in the tropics dripping noise baked
in fiery waters.
Come in enter the poem
lyrical veins of solemn silence
balls of verbs rolled into joy
subjects at the sharpened fore
fill your past tensed famished soul
on buffets of adverbial gourmet
Come in enter the poem
peace reigns in restful phloem
rhyming tendrils comb your hair
adjectives in starchy flair
sweet the smell of inflorescence
atop the noun of lofty essence
Come in enter the poem
