J-Companion, Partner, Lover
The explosion of joy
The implosion of sadness
The wonder of pleasure
The ordinary talk
The mundane afternoon
The long night
The loveliness of morning

J-Power
That you think you are less
Than you were
Because you love someone
Is the saddest commentary
On the power of intolerance
On the power of labels
On the power of prejudice

Fishing Time
Hands in pockets
Pants tucked neatly in his boots
He stood looking at the river
Brown cap with earflaps down
Keeping the cold at bay
This sunny February morning
Longing by the river
His eyes measured the banks
Dreaming of fishing time

Takeback
I take it all back
I wanted to say
It was momentary, meaningless
You don't dance this dance
How can I
Feel this way
Cry at the beauty of a fall flower
Marvel at your intellect
Wonder at your sense of the ordinary
Laugh with you at some mistake, yours or ours
When you don't dance this dance of love

J-First Summer
Sitting on the porch
Swimming in the pond
Summer pastimes
Earned with winter work
Reading, reaping rewards
Lazily letting life be leisure
You sit your porch
I swim my pond
We reach across the miles
With mind, heart, telephone
Now and then
The distance too far
For our being
A car, yours or mine
Covers the miles
We can no longer
Tolerate

J-Love In Our Ages Love In Stages
In the first month
Love was tentative
Love was laughter
Love was ecstasy
In the second month
Love made questions
Love made laughter
Love made richness
In the third month
Love gave friendship
Love gave laughter
Love gave family
In the fourth month
Love became promise
Love became laughter
Love became spring

While I Wasn't Looking
*About New York City Landords
While I wasn't looking
They took my home away
They said it was theirs
Because they had more money
And they could make more money
It wasn't mine just because I lived there all my life
Just because my dad paid for it when I was young
And my mom paid for it when I was young
Just because I had paid for it for an adult third of my life
How could it be mine
If they had more money
So they took my home away
Because they could

Winter In The Fall
Five inches of cold, white, snow
Confront my door
Where is my shovel
Need I slog up the hill
Shall I clear my way down
From the shed
Past the unfinished greenhouse
Past the snow filled trench
The pickax and spade are buried
Somewhere beneath that soft, cold blanket
My warm fire is burning orange and blue
Looking out at a distant window light
The pure, clean of this first thick snow
Seems benign
Exactly right this morning

J…To A Nunnery
Blue Cohosh, Spring Beauties, Trillium
Purple the forest floor
Earth exhales a fertile scent
Newborn leaves unwrinkle
Wild leeks rarefy the air
Sun catches ripples on the creek
Clear, cold water
Invites a walk, a dip
Not quite a swim
Jacket, sweat shirt, bra and jeans
Drape the swaying tree
Sneakers, socks and panties
Protecting pampered winter skin
Cover feet and bottom
Gravely banks
Sharp edged, slippery rocks
Require concentration

J-Home
These soft, round, green hills
Soothe my mind
Quiet my soul
I left them for the ocean
And some other hills
I saw whales and seals
Waves tossed my kayak
Winds threatened my schooner
Sunset at Campobello gloried my dinner
Granite boulders demanded climbing
Tide pools opened other lives to us
A sandy beach of ground up seashells
Gave us rocks and sand dollars
And time to chase the waves
The stiff, soft ocean air
