stones echo
in the bell tower's shadow:
sunset Angelus

ground fog
blankets a rice field
stopping at the road
a bearded man cloak-shrouded
waits on the traffic

tiny tree frog
rides indoors with the house plants
then leaps in jello.
Which amphibian world
did he aim for: earth? water?

on the elm leaf's tip
raindrops gather after clouds
have rolled away,
catching enough of sunset
to transform them to a flame

dark clouds funneling
frog leaps to the new street pond
mimosa bows low
lightning crystallizes
all movement in searing light

meteor arching the sky
stone skipping on lake
all must fall, become silent
yet not grief for a drowned child

Ruby Expressions
Firelight through wine glasses
Paints ruby expressions on the ceiling
That move with the dance of shadows on the bed below.
We fall exhausted into the down comforter
Next to the dying fire,
With your hunger finally slaked,
Slumber overtakes you.
Sweat cools me quickly
In the January night,
I pull the cedar-scented blanket
Under my chin, but my stirring
Disturbs your sleep,
And you reach out of your dream
Pull me into that world of desire
where I am yours.

Five Images
I
A naked body
bronze as the sun
poises against the sky
to dive,
then flings his form
into the tide,
parting waters
without a splash,
like the day sliding
beneath the sky.

The day is sliding
beneath the sky,
slipping away soundlessly,
like a diver
parting waters without a splash.

Moonlight Sestina
While reading Li Po, I fall
Asleep, and dream of the moon
My body lies on white
Cool sheets, flooded in a pool
Of moonlight. Lost in a dream
I lie in light, floating.
Like a full moon floating
On waves, I feel the fall
And rise, the tide of these dream
Currents. Closer, the moon
Approaches to my pool
Of flesh, shining me white.
From the glare of waxing white,
Gauze curtains – breeze floating -
Shield this rippling pool,
Become a waterfall,
And break the mirror moon-
Light through wet prisms, I dream.
