Forlorn Hope
Hope is meant to lift darkness,
Point to some future goodness,
Forestall a danger that is looming,
Open a window on a new beginning.
We must keep its flame burning
In a selfish world past caring.
We see signs of warning,
Pointers to global warming,
But we are told not to worry,
And our fears we must bury,
For it’s simply a matter of less fuel-burning.
And all the while, our hope consuming.

LINDA (an acrostic poem)
Lady Luck came my way,
Invited me for a short stay.
Not knowing what to do,
Did not dare to date you,
Away you went on holiday.
Lady Luck came again,
Inspired me into action.
Now I knew what to do,
Decided to invite you,
And awaited your return.
*******
Lovely to look at, natural,
Intelligent, caring, maternal,
Never selfish, but sacrificial,
Dependable, amiable,
A partner most delectable.

on your 2nd anniversary (11th Oct.2008)
On your 2nd anniversary (11th Oct.2008)
Oh, how time plays tricks on a sorrowful heart
And how it appears to save then casts adrift
And how it magnifies a straw into a saving raft
And how it turns a ray of hope into a golden sun
And how it compresses two years into a day
And how it stretches them to feel like eternity
And how the future waxes and wanes
And how it draws near then flees away
And how the events of that fateful day
Stay ever fresh in my memory.

London,1957-2010
London,1957-2010
Glad to be on a train heading north,
Away from ‘London of the uncouth’,
Where the milk of kindness ceased to flow
Such a long, long time ago.
Malnourished souls rushing to and fro
Always in a hurry, somewhere to go,
With no time to spare for me and you.
We hear of the war years, the blitz too,
Of friendships forged and good deeds to do,
But this is a far cry from the London I know.
Could it be that time made Londoners so,
Or is it me who has a blinkered view.

Now is the Time
Make poverty history,
Put an end to misery.
Be brave, America,
Give life to Africa.
Help it smash the chains
Of greed, ill-gotten gains.
Bite the bullet and give,
Let Africa breathe and live.
Once, a Council in secret convened,
Unjustly, a death sentence decreed.
An innocent on the Cross bled,
No one dared to come to his aid.
The G8 summit, too, will in secret meet,
Will the rich embrace the poor and greet?
Will the condemned innocents
Be freed from ills, poverty and Aids?

And Did.........
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon Bethlehem’s hills
And did a host of angels give praise
At the birth of the Saviour by an inn.
And did the Magi come from afar
To pay homage, guided by a star,
And did Caesar a census decree
And Herod go on a killing spree
It matters not what tales are told
Or if the Truth in myths clothed
I only know my Redeemer was born
To show the Way and for sins atone
*The historicity of the events surrounding the birth
of Jesus in Bethlehem have been questioned by
most scholars over the last two centuries.

History is Bunkum
History is Bunkum
History is often written by the victor
A web of deceit woven by the writer
To glorify the deeds of his master
And decry the good deeds of the loser:
His name is vilified
His good deeds set aside
His just cause demonised
Only the winner is glorified
History is father and mother of lies
Fabrications the writer describes
Leaving us an account after his demise,
A legacy that hopefully fools and survives
The passage of time testifies to its credibility
Self-interest confers on it the seal of authenticity
It is then paraded as the voice of truth and sanity

Land and Sea
Land and Sea
As though by some eternal decree,
Land and sea are destined to disagree
Over where the shoreline should be.
At tide time the Sea rises in anger,
Roars with a sound like thunder,
Summons all the power it can muster.
The Sea advances in waves,
Pushes the shoreline in steps,
Overwhelms Land's defences.
The Land retreats stage by stage,
As the Sea extends its range,
All the while dissipating its rage.
In time, the Sea is pacified and content,
Calls upon its waves to beat a retreat,

Farewell Joe
Gentle Joe, always smart,
Polite in manner and chat,
A fighter to the bitter end,
A family man and a friend.
You lived your life to the full,
Weathering the storm of time,
Basking in the lull of the storm,
Life was never boring or dull.
Dancing beguiled you with its allure,
Your steps graced many a dance floor,
Keeping you fit, youthful, alert,
You gave it up with much regret.
The Lord granted you plentiful years,
And now grants a new life of ease,
Under the shade of the tree of peace,
Beside the babbling brook of repose.

The Gift of Faith
It is said, “Faith is a gift from above,
God-given to those who believe”.
In fact, Faith is to all mankind given,
But for some it remains hidden
In the recesses of the mind
Until they seek it and find
That it is, indeed, God-given.
Faith is often discovered
After some anguish and doubt;
But whichever way is followed
That way is lit by its light.
No one has gone astray
Who sought to find a way
To uncover a gift so great.
But how does one make a start,
And seek a gift hidden from sight,
When there are no signs to mark
A way where all around is dark?
