Mihai Eminescu

Farewell [Adio]

I won't be seeing you again,
Fareweel! I'm feeling blue
Too bad I'll have to live in pain
Because of you.

From now on, do the things your way,
From now on, I am free
Although I'm stunned that you today
Are leaving me.

I'll not be tempted anymore
To take our love to Mars
And to get drunk, as did before,
With sparks of stars.

So many times I froze in snow,
In front of your small place
Hoping that some day you would show
Your pretty face.

A Dacian's prayer [Rugăciunea unui dac]

When there was neither death, nor immortality,
Nor seed of light to give life and fertility,
Nor yesterday, today, tomorrow and for ever,
For one was everything and all were one together;
When earth and sky and air and all this world profound
Were things that until then had never been around,
Back then, was only You, and in my mind I wonder,
Who is the God we worship, who makes us hear the thunder?

He is the God that stood before all gods in dark
And from the boundless waters produced a little spark,
He gives the gods their souls, makes happy His creation
He is for all the people a fountain of salvation
Cheer up and praise the Lord! Forget about your strife,
He is the death of death and is the life of life!

And He gave me the eyes to see the shining light
And mercifully filled my heart with pure delight
In roaring winds I've heard His footsteps all the time
And in a sublime song I've felt His holy rhyme,

Venus and Madonna [Venere şi Madonă]

An ideal lost in darkness of a world that's gone for ever,
Which in fairy tales was thinking and in poems used to speak,
I can see and hear you, goddess, my sweet news, so young and clever
Living in a starry heaven full of deities antique.

Venus, warm and tender marble, eye of stone, which sparkles lively
Lazy arm, like the slow thinking of a king and poet, too,
Wonderful deification of the woman looking nicely,
Of that woman, which at present, still I think she's fair and true.

Raphael, lost in his visions, in a night when stars were present,
Soul by rays intoxicated and by many lovely springs,
Saw you and he dreamed the heaven with its gardens, smelling pleasant,
Saw you floating among angels and among the holy things.

And created on the canvas the Madonna, divine being,
With her maiden smile and wearing a tiara of stars bright
With pale face and yellow tresses, woman-angel and appealing,
For the woman is the image of the angels pure and white.

Prince Charming from the linden

– Blanca, even from the cradle
Your groom is the God above
For you're born, my wretched baby
Of a wrong, unworthy love.

In the monastery Ste. Anna
You will find the holy grace
For your soul, which is resentful,
For the saving of my face.

– I'm not willing, my dear father,
To seclude my happy soul:
I love hunting, I love dancing;
Let the world follow its goal.

I don't want to lose my tresses,
Which are hanging to the ground,
To go blind reading old pages
With pale incense smoke around.

Mortua est

A torch watching closely the sad and wet tomb,
A bell chiming harshly in this holy gloom,
A dream which is dipping its wing in the gall
That's how you have traveled beyond the world's wall.

You've passed when the sky is a field of delight,
With rivers of sweet milk and flowers of light,
When castles of black clouds are hiding the sun
And moon, the fair queen, visits them one by one.

You are like the silver that catches the eye,
With wings elevated you soar to the sky,
The clouds airy scaffold you climb, pale white soul,
Through showers of sun rays, the stars are your goal.

A ray takes you higher, a song leads your quest,
Your arms, white and tender, are crossed on your chest,
When loud is the spinning of spells everywhere,
There's silver in waters and gold in the air.

Evening Star [Luceafărul]

There was, as in the fairy-tales,
Back in the distant time,
Of royal blood, which still prevails,
A girl sweet and sublime.

The only child, with no constraints,
And fair and full of charms,
Shining like Mary among saints
And moon among the stars.

She glides through the majestic halls
As if she slowly skates,
Goes to the window where befalls
That Evening Star awaits.

Above the sea he always stays
For rises and shines bright,
Along the moving water ways
Guides all the ships at night.
