Kannan G

(W – 2011) Random Musings – 001

These are random thoughts
Not sorted out
These are not words sifted out
From the grinder of contemplation
They are not refined and polished
But they are pristine
They have life in them
And I want to let them live
Since life and its experiences
Are ever reflecting upon themselves
Whatever issues forth from them
I prefer to call as musings.

They are to me rich poetry
The underlying meanings may sometimes
Not be so much visible to others
But deep down the ocean
As I keep floating
(Swimming is too harsh a word here)
Currents of thoughts break upon me

(V - 2009) The Truth of the Truth

The Sages and Seers
That be and have been
Cannot have seen
The truth of the Truth!

What they see as Truth
Is Truth merely
It’s not really
The truth of the Truth!

The Ultimate Truth
Cannot be known
We aren’t that grown –
The truth of the Truth!

We’re part of the Truth
We’re trying to see
We’re yet so tiny –
The truth of the Truth!

(V - 2009) My Mother and This World

If all were
So loving as my mother
This world would be so happier!

If all were
So passionate as my mother
This world would be so greener!

If all were
So compassionate as my mother
This world would be so safer!

If all were
So conscious as my mother
This world would be so healthier!

If all were
So considerate as my mother
This world would be so peaceful!

(J - Baba Amte - 1994) Work Builds but Charity Destroys

He built his monumental work
On the rocks of his pithy philosophy:
‘Work Builds; Charity Destroys.’
Whenever the tempest of time blows across
He feels no loss –
His work stands unaffected;
Self-reliance he has perfected.
To those poor palms
Fated to seek alms
A few tools he gave,
Their spirits to save,
And they carved out
The beauty of self-dignity
From what was first their self-pity,
Their disability,
Their poverty,
Their agony!
In the desert of leprosy
He sowed seeds of sympathy,
Seeds of empathy,

(V - 2004) The Lad who was called Mad

People called him mad.
Many a days
He came to my mother
He would then say
‘There is fire in my stomach’
My mother would then hurry her cooking
Soon she would serve
Rice and curry
Spiced with love and care.
He would eat to his full
And at the very next door
He would again say
‘There is fire in my stomach –
I am hungry still’
And so one day
I looked deep into him
Wondered what his hunger was for
And saw fire in his heart.
Still, he little knew that
He simply said, ‘there is fire in my stomach’

(V – 1988) Fighting Fate

Oh, things out of control we call real fate
For factors far unknown too decide our state!
But things there are we must not see as mere fate;
Such things if controlled can oh, alter our state!

No thunder or tyrant is ever such fate
If faced with courage and soon held to checkmate!
Oh, thou art the architect of thy own fate!
So fight well with will and thus safeguard thy state!

At times we may fall to some strange, cruel fate;
By them should never our will still abate!
With arrows of resolve and faith, fight thy fate!
Oh, give no space ever to stand or to wait!

So bow not or falter before any fate;
Oh, fear and despair will thy fate aggravate!
Grim panic and anguish will strengthen our fate;
They make us, oh, lick a time unduly late!

(V – 2010) Emotions

Emotions sometimes flow as cascades!
Sometimes, dropp by dropp they drip
As does water from a broken pot!
Sometimes they stay unstiring, still
As water in a stagnant pond!
Emotions sometimes, as fireflies, flicker!
Sometimes they keep flaming fine
As steady as a candle flame!
Sometimes they flare up suddenly high
As the blaze of a burning torch!
Emotions sometimes colour our lives creatively!
Sometimes they stir a spoonful of hues
To the cup of our daily little joys!
Sometimes they splash colours bright and thick
Upon the dark monotony of our dreary days!
Emotions sometimes play a music enchanting!
Sometimes they strum a silent tune
Upon the veena of our tender hearts!
Sometimes they beat the drums hard and fast
And let our minds and lives go rocking!

(V – 1990) War & Peace

War has stabbed the heart of peace
And peace lies bleeding now –
A peace which was healing slow
The wounds it had suffered hard,
A peace which was recovering
From the mind blowing blows
Of the decades past!

Now the precious blood of that peace is draining
And each dropp of dripping blood
Is singing the songs of savagery
To the frightened ears of civilizations!
Man mastered bombs but now bombs master man!
Man busy growing the world outside
How poor he forgot to grow his inside!
And now when he stands a helpless child
Before the giant of things he grew
Reason comes again and asks
Was this the progress you built through the years
And man has no answer
