Relying on Faith

Let faith be your guide.

Many times, I’ve relied on faith
To get through the hour.
I wasn’t disappointed.

Many times, I’ve relied on faith
To get through the day.
I wasn’t disappointed.

Many times, I’ve relied on faith
To get through the year.
I wasn’t disappointed.

Take a chance.
Trust your faith,

Have 'faith' in faith,
And it will work for you.

Elie Wiesel's “Night”

“Night, ” by Elie Wiesel
Is a must read.
It will take you on a journey
With an incredible lead.
This really touching story
With a metaphor of rain,
Tells of his enduring
Untold agony and pain.
And the losses encountered
All along the way.
Then, suddenly, how things
Were turned around one day.

Touching, moving,
And quite formidable,
Thrilling, dramatic,
And unforgettable.

Marriage And Divorce

If marriage is a fortune,
Then divorce is a misfortune:
Failure at one of the greatest
Attempts in life.

Divorce is a miscarriage:
To abort the shared dreams,
Joys, and every fulfillment
That marriage brings.

It is a cruel rending of two
Intertwined, spirited hearts—
Leaving them to slowly
And painfully bleed to death.

Marriage fulfills, but divorce
Is an unfortunate waste.

A Common Addiction among Poets

Intoxicated by the inspiration
Of his trade—
With mental powers at work,
A true poet rarely sleeps.
His mind ever churning
With powerful imagery
That produces thought,
Sound, rhythm and gesture.
He molds with metaphor,
Shapes with simile,
And paints with irony—
To produce a beautiful symphony
(Like some great maestro) ,
For himself and all who would enjoy.
Little wonder he rarely sleeps.

Strumming the Guitar

When reflecting upon
Nostalgic times,
The guitar brings
Memories to mind.
Open-air concerts
Beneath starry skies
Brought lots of fun
To so many lives.
Embracing the moments
Of the day,
The guitarists faithfully
Strummed away.
Folks savored the tune
Of the joyful sounds—
Enjoying one another
E’er the world went round.

Music is spirited
And carefree.
And strumming the guitar

As Old as Time

Water's a natural resource
That's as old as time.
Its echoing demand,
In every age has chimed.

Water is prolific,
It's used in many ways.
It cleans and purifies,
And replenishes for days.

Water is medicinal—
Promoting health and strength.
It even goes as far
As preserving life at length.

Water entertains
In many a way:
Boating, skiing, fishing,
Or musing by the bay.

Hurricane Season (1995)

‘Tis a season bringing fear
(Beginning June 1st each year) ,
With destructive winds and rain:
The season of the hurricanes.

For costly time our city vied
In June, nineteen ninety-five,
When on the very second day,
A hurricane was in array.

June third of ninety-five,
Hurricane Alison passed us by.
And again, Savannah is blessed
And grateful for a haven’s rest.

Each year, this little prayer I pray:
“Dear Lord, keep the storms away.
While the perilous season lasts,
Protect us from potential blasts.

Childhood Halloweens

Once I celebrated Halloween:
It was a part of my childhood.
Everyone was so excited.
And dressing up
In ghostly costumes,
We went trick-or-treating in groups.
We always received treats,
And never had to trick anyone—
As far as I can remember.

But one time a fellow trick-or-treater,
From behind, snatched my bag of candy.
What a mean trick!

The bag was almost full
As the candy spilled onto the ground.
But others helped me to gather all of it,
And the trickster’s plot was overthrown.
What a time those Halloweens were.
Do kids still celebrate?

Football Frenzy

Football is a contact sport;
In short—a “rough” game.
It may leave you dancing,
Or it could leave you lame.

Armed with helmets, jerseys
And spandex tights—
All tough dudes,
Ready for the fight.

Digging in with spiked shoes,
And war paint on their face.
Staring down the adversary—
No mercy and no grace.

Tackles, hits and yard runs.
The scoring of “touchdowns, ”
With each team striving
For the coveted crown.

Sonnet: Postal Stamp History

Sonnet: Postal Stamp History

The postal stamp started in England (1840)
And was destined to spread around the world.
It would soon reach as far as Brazil,
As the momentum continued to swirl.
It reached the United States of America
In the year of eighteen-forty five.
And a winner throughout the centuries
The postal stamp is very much alive.

The price of the first stamp was one cent.
But today, it would cost forty-four
And with so many rate hikes in between,
I am very sure that there will be more.
And as long as there is mail to send,
The postal stamp will never come to end.
