Confession??? -Yun Dong-Ju

파란 녹이 낀 구리 거울 속에
내 얼굴이 남아 있는 것은
어느 왕조(王朝) 의 유물(遺物) 이기에
이다지도 욕될까.
O what shame it is
to see my face still intact
in this rusted-green bronze mirror
What dynasty's heritage this is,
I wonder!

나는 나의 참회(懺悔) 의 글을 한 줄에 줄이자.
― 만 이십 사년(滿 二十 四年일 개월(一個月) 을
무슨 기쁨을 바라 살아 왔던가.
Let me sum up this record of my confession
-24 years and one month of my life
for what joy have I lived?

내일이나 모레나 그 어느 즐거운 날에
나는 또 한 줄의 참회록(懺悔錄) 을 써야 한다.
― 그때 그 젊은 나이에

O Lord My God! - -Carl Boberg

O Lord my God!
When I in awesome wonder
consider all the worlds
Thy hands have made
I see the stars,
I hear the rolling thunder,
The power throughout the universe displayed

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the geltle breeze;

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great thou art!

Black Angel

One day in my life
I was walking along the road
then suddenly I saw this bright garmented angel
looking at me
with a smile on his face
so serene his posture was
I utterly lost my words
to speak anything
at the sight
so grandeur and in awe
I asked to myself
what in the world do I have to do
with this....
then the angel quietly held my hand
and led me to his world
a bit dark though clean however
I was abiding with him
for some time
until the time came
and I took off for

A Prodigal's Return

Was it that hard
to stay away from home
swearing you won't go back
eating the pigs' food
day by day
swearing you won' go back home
having spent all your money and youth
having suffered through the hardest calamities
and heart breaks and morbid treatments from people?
you still think it's alright to stay
away from Father's care
the loving and the all accepting God
who is your father awaiting for you
day and night in front of the gate
thinking of you day and night
wondering what you might be doing
wondering where you might be staying for the night
whether you have eaten your meals
or have enough clothing
He awaits you at the gate day and night

Dear My Dead Husband - 1583

You said
you will abide with me
till the Milky Way dies away
yet you are here
now in the dark,
dark grave
leaving me all alone
in this lone bedside
longing for you
day and night
with tearful eyes
Where are you?
My lord!
I bore
you three children
They are sound asleep
with no knowledge of
your whereabouts
thinking you might
someday out of nowhere

Wolf Man

What do you think about a girl
who fell in love with a wolf man
night after night
she would look at his photo
on an LP record cover
missing him and thinking about him
This girl was me in my younger days
for he looked so serene and beautiful
without knowing his fate that
when the moon rises he will have to turn into
a wolf and roam around the fields and mountains
She didn't know his fate though she knew
he is the wolf man
with the charm he only contained in his feature
with a soul that maddened him and her
simultaneously
They never met in person
but the girl was truly in love with this wolf man
or rather a young boy he was
as young as she was I think 14

Bear With Me

The operator girl
kept saying this to me
over the phone
while waiting for her
to finish her assignment
I requested for her to do
but she kept saying
'Bear with me, bear with me...'
I thought to myself
what do I have to bear with
only a phone call bill
at the end of the month...
and a little patience
for this girl to finish her job?
but she is so sweet to say
such words that warm my heart
in the end
what do I have to bear with now?
A new light shined on me
with this man as sweet as this girl

Death

Today I hear
my cousin dead
of cancer...
she was a little darling
to me and the family
but dead
now
I think of my death
like I did
back in 1998
if it's going to approach me
sooner or later
My old friend is dead
of liver cancer
people are dying around us
where would they go
after they die?
This was the most important question
that I have had since young
looking at the tombs on the mount slopes

The Trail of Tears

You have the trail
but where are the tears?
No idea?
You are not that interested in tears
of those who had trodden the trail
from Georgia to Oklahoma
with little to eat or to clothe themselves
Might have seen hundreds and thousands of dead corpses
lying on the outskirts of the trail
with lice and bugs eating their flesh
The winter cold is so harsh
the blanket that they were wearing with bare feet
won't keep them warm
and What about the US army soldiers
once in a while raiding the folks
with a bundle of babies and little kids
they have to survive the long walks and the
cold and the starvation
to look for the place they can call home
for their homes were ripped by the white

Australia

One woman was singing a Yugoslavian song
at a hostel
while I smell some pot smoke coming
into the window from outside
The buildings were all painted white and blue with pink tones
the new settlers in the 1800s have built their homes
on the outskirts of Sydney the port city of
New South Wales
The Yugoslavian song was so foreign and exotic in my ears
and the melody is soaking in my heart
while I wondered who is the person smoking pot
at that early hour of the morning
That day I went out to the Sydney port
to see where the new settlers might have first docked
their ships
where the English criminals were shipped to be
only imprisoned
the first ancestors of the Ausies
'Goo'day, mate! '
They say hi to me this way
