Spring Flowers ~ Irises

Irises these most regal Spring flowers
Over flowerbeds reign
Never their destiny to bow
Sometimes will grant visitation powers
If by chance they deign
Audience agree to allow

Royal Blues and kingly Purple hues too
Colors that naturally
They may duly own
Golden tones appropriately will do
As may pure Whites regally
Serve as royal gown

Irises reign over other garden flowers
As if such were theirs
By Botanically rightful due
But if you possessed similar stately powers
Some like regal airs
You might readily adopt too

The Power of One

One second might not tell
When held against an hour
One hour might not count
When weighed against a day
One day may not matter
When considering a life

One word may mean little
From the conversation whole
One line may not be missed
When stricken from the book
One thought may be dismissed
In comprehension of the mind

One flaw might be overlooked
When evaluating character
One mistake means little
When summing up a man
One sin may be forgiven
In the judgement of a soul

Caught Up

Caught up
in lust, in laughs
in bluster and bursts
amid tirades and trysts
All spilling out in lines

Caught up
in oodles and oodles
of Valentines
some lace
some trace
the lines of
a lost lover’s face

Caught up
in drama
and trauma
and some laundry lists
Thank God for twists
that bring a smile

Calling Out

All the Universe is calling out
to every atom across space
in turn each single atom
answers as it must
with all things
so keeping
pace

All of life is calling out to
all the other living things
flowers calling to bees
answer just to please
themselves, yet
doing so meet
flowers
needs

All Humanity is calling out
to all other breathing souls
and all in turn somehow

Late Snow

Late winter snow gains impact
through element of surprise
and potential disappointment
burying, as it may,
the tender shoots of spring

Stepping on the toes
of springs first warming rain
the sudden return of snowflakes
guarantees a thicker flocking
on every branch and twig
Night’s chill will seal this fluff
like crystallizing sugar sets cake frosting

I would rather dream of green
buds on trees and shoots of flowers
spared swaddle beneath snow’s blanket

Such choice will not be given
Snow falls, snowfalls

Until That Day

War visits
too many places
traces blood markings
upon too many generations

War arrives
as old men decide
just where and when
to send young men to die

War leaves
too many faces
wearing traces of scars
which worm their way inward
then persist to endure as long as men live
because old men required young men should give
greater share than their bodies and minds had to spare

War will persist
as long as old men insist

Before All Fades to Gray

On late winter afternoons
Before it all fades to gray
Distractions blur mind’s focus
Engendering thoughts to stray

A dark crow perched on a limb
The gray squirrel on the fence
Rely instinct will reveal
Their ordained paths leading hence

No parallel guide exists
For humankind to resource
While sufficient light remains
To secure my future course

Thoughts percolate inside
What purpose or intent
Will providence provide
Before daylight is spent

Skipping Stones

Perhaps they don’t throw stones
Simply skipping them instead
Picking and choosing only the best
Sleek, slim, rounded at the edges
Such as will easily skim along the surface
Lacking desire to plum the depths

We, poets, observe them
Driven to distraction at times
Amused at other junctures
Maddened as well in turn
Or merely apathetic
But always perplexed
At these ‘Skimmers’
Whose fundamental immediate lives
Leave them skimming across the surface
Never dipping hands into cold deep waters
Or noticing the stream reflecting
The wonders of the skies

Wrinkles

Wrinkles in time
trite phrase yet true
where life creates chaos
it leaves wrinkles in you

Furrows in fields
we pass along the way
while navigating roads
we must travel each day

All leave their mark
both inside and out
as we strive to comprehend
what life really is about

Holes in the fabric of time and space
equate to the wearing that in living takes place
With fabric and lives the choices seem the same
We can deal with challenges or merely place the blame

Chasm

On the edge I stand
Constructing paper airplanes
Crisp clean fresh sheets
Free of any dark remark
Regrets, recriminations
Would only weigh them down

Hope the force that lifts
Fate determines course
Urged by gentle thoughts
Love or luck sees them across

Dove gray morning moments
Whispering pink dawns
Busy blue-sky days
Shouting orange sunsets
My thoughts sail out toward you

Whether under full faced Moon
Or tiny silver slivered smile
