It's On It's Way Again!

Shops packed
stress levels high
presents to get
prices sky high.
Kids wanting this
and asking for that
don't forget the Dog
and Tiddles the Cat.
Aftershave and Perfume
socks for the Feet
they'll do nicely
for old Uncle Pete.
Hoping for Snow
so the kids can play
but it usually rains
the whole of the day.
Christmas is for Children
is what we like to say
but what a palaver
all for just one day.

My Very First Football Match

Holding my Fathers hand
walking to the ground
crowds of Football fans
making lots of sound.
Standing on the terraces
players warming up
maybe a League game
or even the F.A.Cup.
Dad said I just stared
but that I enjoyed it all
and when I got back home
went straight out with my ball.
And when I too became a Dad
I went and did exactly the same
taking both my young sons
to nearly every home game.
So if your looking down Dad
and you spot me in the crowd
you'll see I've carried on the tradition
and I hope it makes you proud.

Last Day on Earth

If you only had one day to live
what would you do or say
Would you be scared and cry
or get to your knees and pray?
Would you say bitterly why me
I'm just not ready to die?
And would you think am I off to Hell
or to the heavenly place on high?
Would you do something outrageous
or go on a mad spending spree?
But you could just accept reality
and say at last I'm going to be free?
One day this will happen to us all
whether we're ready for it or not
but please Lord can I go to Heaven
and not down below where it's very hot!

From Coventry and proud of it

I'm a Cov kid born and bred
a Coventrian through and through
spent all of my life here
my blood isn't Red but Sky Blue.
Got C.C.F.C.tattooed on my arm
support them through thick and thin
but their not a team for the faint hearted
you need patience and a thick skin.
But I love my club and my city
this place of peace and reconcilliation
a city that has opened it's doors
to all faiths and to every nation.
So even though it was hit badly
during the war by enemy planes
it has proudly risen up again
just like Phoenix from the flames.

Gone but never forgotten

Twenty plus years have gone by
since the day you passed away
and even though life goes on
I think about you nearly every day.
They say time is a great healer
but I'm not sure that is really true
because I looked at your picture
and my mood suddenly turned blue.
I wanted you to live a long time
but alas it wasn't meant to be
still I've got all of those memories
and nobody can take them from me.
So rest in peace my lovely Mother
until the day I see you again
then we all can be happy once more
when there will no more sadness or pain.

A silly poem about keys

Keys can open doors
they can lock you in
keys on a piano
but not on a Violin.
Keys to a safe
inside a vault
keys lost again
well that's your fault.
Keys on an old typewriter
and on a modern laptop
keys stolen by a thief
to break into a shop.
Keys hang on a keyring
or on a fancy chain
but how on earth can you
dropp them down a drain?
Keys for this and that
a key lying under the mat
having to rush to the Vet
it's been swallowed by the cat.

Snow

It falls out of the sky
and covers the ground
turning everything White.
Children love the snow
throwing snowballs at each other
and building snowmen.
But older people don't like it much
glad when it's gone they often say
staying indoors in the warm.
Christmas cards have snow scenes
Yuletide and snow go together
even though it rarely snows at Christmas.
Snow represents Winter time
and coats, hats, scarves, and gloves,
hot drinks and rosy cheeks.
Snow to some is just like Marmite
you either love it or hate it
personally I like them both!

The Old Man alone in his room

He doesn't like to talk
just sits quietly
never smiles or laughs.
Won't join in any of the games,
eats his meals in his room
leaves his tray outside the door.
Next to his bed is a black and white
photograph of a man in uniform.
In a drawer lie medals covered by socks,
bravery hidden away.
He can hear laughter outside his room
as he stares out of his window at a dark cold sky.
When the sun shines he likes to feed the birds,
a squirrel takes food from his outstretched hand.
One day his tray isn't outside the door,
outside a lone squirrel waits.

Ban Them For Life

They sang songs about a disaster
thinking they sounded cool
but that shows them to be cowards
and having the minds of a fool.
They should not be called fans
as they are nothing of the sort
they should be banned for life
and named and shamed when caught.
Football does not need them
don't let them make a sound
they're not a part of the Football family
so keep them away from the ground.
We are pleased the truth finally came out
as the people of Liverpool never let it rest
but real fans are behind you all of the way
as you do whatever you think is best.

Why is there War?

A young person asked me
why is there war?
people getting killed
and for what for?
All she saw was hate
no love only fear
never ending wars
year after year.
Is it about money
oil or land
is it religion?
I don't understand.
Young soldiers dying
going to an early grave
all this for their country
they must be very brave.
She waited for an answer
looked me straight in the eye
she really wanted to know
why the innocent had to die.
