Emmanuel Oduro

I Chose to Become a Star

Right from the start,
Papa presented a proposition pretty startling
Which he termed a starter:
Work hard and become a star,
Do what suffices and become a standard
Or work lazily and become a stain.
I chose to become a star.

I chose to be first among equals.
I opted to be a moon among the stars.
To taste being unusual,
Experience being extraordinary,
Be enumerated among the enviable elite.
Make a crystal clear difference,
With foot prints on the sand of time,
A glittering, glistening, glinting star.
I chose to become a star.

This choice has a high price.

My Ideal Man

A man of 360 degrees personality.
A man of many colours.
A man of many souls,
Suited for every single season,
Tailored for a fair number of tasks.
He is my ideal man.

It is not his outward beauty,
But his devastating internal brilliance.
A man of amazing aspiration,
Who issues incredible inspiration.
You are my ideal man.

A man like a magnet,
Drawing into his fold and bosom,
All panaches of people,
‘Cos he commands remarkable respect,
And radiates astonishing admiration.
That is my ideal man.

Scapegoatism

When the going is smooth,
When success is the standard
When compliments flow from all angles
And the group is swimming in brilliance
They misappropriate the praises
They appropriate the prizes
They arrogate credit for good decisions
They usurp the tribute for choice of suitable strategy
They claim the accolade for the group's glory
And steal the honour of becoming the acclaimed

But when the going becomes tough
When defeat is experienced
When strategies do not deliver
When victory becomes a mirage
When challenges stir the group the face
When criticisms flow from all directions
And the group assumes the status of a joker
They point accusing figures at others
They craftily jettison the blames

Experience, The Best Teacher

When I was a student,
Many a teacher preached a sermon.
A sermon of, surprisingly, same subject.
This tedious theme could be thus summarized:
‘ if I could my student life re-live,
Very differently would I behave'.

A discourse denoting a dirge
A communication connoting a caution
If not a counselling to student who have ears
Students who would not shed tears,
Because they have ears to hear
And wise enough to understand,
Words of wisdom, even few.

But why to us their sermon relate?
Why to us their stories declare?

It is because about our future they care.
Careful, concerned and committed teachers,

You Can Also Do It

What one student can accomplish
You can also do, if relished.
For every student is fully furnished,
With material and mental muscles,
To sundry scholarly tasks undertake,
All school subjects understand,
And every academic errand,
Eagerly and excellently ended.
This clarifies the claim that,
You too can definitely do,
What any student can do.

Where one student can glitter
You can, if you wish, also glisten
The secret is surprisingly simple
Your strengths crystal-clearly identify
Your weaknesses cautiously classify
A sound study strategy surfaces
Making solid your strengths
Weakening your weaknesses

You did It, Africa

Celebrate Africa.
Africa rejoice.
RSA celebrate
You made a fantastic reality,
Out of their fantasy.
Out of their impossibility
You conjured actuality.
The maiden mega match of soccer
Occurred with surprising success.
You did it, Africa.
You excelled RSA
Congratulation.

Celebration unparalleled,
Jubilation unprecedented.
Africa has delivered
RSA has excelled
Matching the momentous moment,
With feats that fitted the fiesta.
Excellent in events management,

What an Astounding world!

What an Astounding World!
You are an astounding world,
Awfully fruitless to fathom
No wonder, your formation
Is definitely not fortuitous,
But a superlative function,
By a supernatural factor.
What an astounding world!

A world of unearthly workmanship,
A creation of unnatural craftsmanship.
The handiwork of the only Craft-God,
Unfolding with painstaking precision,
Progressing with amazing predictability.
What a mystical masterpiece,
The centerpiece of the Universe.

What a paranormal handiwork,
Moving on with amazing consistency.
Day always followed by night,

Destiny In Your Own Hands

Who decides what one becomes in future?
Is it God, one's parents or oneself?
Is it one's headteacher, teachers or friends?

If it is God, then how unfair;
Too many unsuccessful people,
Too few successful people.
But God's stand is crystal clear,
This in His Holy Book unambiguous upheld.
I place before you life and death,
The choice is clearly yours to make.
God is first and foremost,
Fatherly-fair and free-minded,
Wishing you all you wish yourself,
Placing your destiny at the proper place.
Providence is yours to decide.

If my parents, then I better relax.
No parent will visit failure on his child,
Every parent will wish their children well.

Life

Life is not a bed of roses
Life is full of ups and downs
Life, they say, is what you make it
Or, maybe, how you make it

But it seems to me rather curious
Why a greater group of God's creations
Would choose to make their lives
Bumpy, lumpy and clumpy
Instead of bouncy and bubbly

Some clearly act carelessly
Do things remarkably recklessly
Never learning from their bloopers
Always blooming in their bloomers
Making for themselves
Lives lined with lack
Presences padded with pointless poverty
Life is palpably how they play it
