A Sixties Childhood

Scrumping apples and kicking footballs
climbing trees and scaling walls
playing marbles in the street
I wonder what became of my mate Pete?
Lots of picnics in the sun
Uncle Stan being so much fun
chasing Butterflies and catching frogs
throwing sticks for our two dogs.
Fishing for Sticklebacks in the stream
licking lollies and eating ice-cream
doing wheelies on my bike
I wonder what became of my pal Mike?
Father playing Cricket on the village green
Mother always washing and keeping the house clean.
the garden colourful with a beautiful scent
and a man in a suit collecting the rent.
Watching T.V. in black and white
all gathered round on a Saturday night
it being so quiet on the day of rest
me and my sister in our Sunday best.

End Of The Season Drama

Nerves all jittery and fraught
fingernails chewed to the quick
this is the lot of the football fan
end of the season can make you sick.
One minute your team is staying up
the next you're on your way down
that smile you had on your face
is now replaced with a miserable frown.
With mobiles flashing up scores
and radios pressed to one's ear
it's either going to be bubbly Champagne
or crying into a pint of flat beer.
No time for a sun drenched vacation
Gardening, Fishing, or a spot of D.I.Y.
to the fan this is a really serious matter
but it's only football I can hear you cry.
Try saying that to the weary supporter
who follows his team home and away
when faced with the dreaded relegation
he drops to his knees to pray.

Their All Jolly Good Sports

Batsmen stand at their crease
the aim is to get them out
fielders dive about for catches
when the ball has been given a clout.
Boxers step boldly into the ring
they try and knock their opponent out
as they move and bob around
the crowd get excited and shout.
The dart player at the Oche
throws his darts at the board
while a Fencer thrusts his weapon
trying to win points with his sword.
The Formula One driver
has to have nerves of steel
as he tears around the circuit
sat behind his steering wheel.
Golfers with their putters
driving the ball towards the hole
as the football teams star striker
scores another winning goal.

A Lunatic Asylum

The world gets madder day by day
I think it helps to be a little insane
as there's wars and conflicts everywhere
how much longer can people stand the strain?
Some parts of towns are no go areas
so don't go there in the day or night
and watch out for gangs of hoodies
as they are roaming around wanting a fight.
Druggies are breaking into peoples houses
just to get money to buy more and more gear
while the elderly hope they don't become victims
as they sit in their homes full of anxiety and fear.
Psychos are on our streets shooting someone dead
but to them killing is just a game or a sport
they neither worry or care at the misery they cause
and they revel in the limelight when they get caught.
They spend billions on trips to the Moon and Mars
in the hope they find life all the way up there
but we know that the only life form is down here
where we get diseases, grow old, and get Grey hair.

Was I Just Dreaming?

I watched as the Lord carried his cross
through the streets of my estate,
I wanted to go and help him
but I just looked on instead.
Gangs of feral youths stood around
smoking dope and drinking lager
I was amazed they didn't notice
who was walking past them.
Then it dawned on me
he was invisible to their eyes.
I then watched Christ as he walked
through the crowded city streets,
people going about there business
too busy to notice the Lord in there midst.
I noticed him as he slowed down
was the cross getting too heavy to bear?
he stopped near to a public house,
customers stood outside drinking
but they too seemed oblivious
who was standing so close to them.

Old Joe was Bingo mad

I once knew a bloke called Joe
who was addicted to playing Bingo
he played nearly every day of his life
which cost him his marriage and his wife.
But Joe just could never pack it in
even though he hardly ever did win
as soon as he got out of his bed
the thought of Bingo came into his head.
The biggest win he ever had was sixty quid
and even then he shared it with his pal Sid
but Joe said one day he'd win the jackpot
and then he'd go and live somewhere hot.
But his long suffering wife called Flo
said she'd had enough of his silly Bingo
she shouted to Joe so what's it going to be,
your stupid addiction to playing Bingo or me?
But sadly Joe was now too far gone to care
when Bingo was on he just had to be there.
But alas Joe never won the Bingo jackpot
and he never ended living somewhere hot

The Other Olympians

The Diver leapt off the high board
but missed the water and hit the floor
then his team-mate went and did the same
so the judges gave them a nil score.
The Cyclist set off in his opening heat
but he got a puncture half way round
when he was given a replacement bike
he fell off it hitting his head on the ground.
The Boxer said he'd win the Gold Medal
but in the first round got knocked out the ring
he ended up lying prone amongst the spectators
and a week later he still can't recall a thing.
The Javelin thrower said he felt really good
and he would beat the opponent from Denmark
but his Javelin got caught by a gust of wind
and it ended up outside the arena in the car park.
The Weightlifter raised the bar above his head
but his legs suddenly wobbled and turned to jelly
he ended up collapsed lying on the stage in a heap
with the heavy weight sitting perched on his belly.

The greatest goal of all time

I've seen lots of great goals
some to take your breath away
I recall one from many years ago
that has stayed with me to this day.
The player had the ball at his feet
cutting through the defence like a sword
beating player after player with ease
the whole ground stood to applaud.
I've witnessed individual goals
and some created by most of the team
but the greatest one I've ever seen?
was by myself in a beautiful lucid dream.
I was playing for England against Brazil
the crowd was roaring out my name
it was the World Cup Final at Wembley
two all with a minute left in the game.
I then tackled and robbed Pele of the ball
and I went on a long and mazy run
it ended with me hitting home the winner
'What a goal' read the headline in the Sun.

Let's Rock!

I grew up listening to The Beatles
and lots of other great bands too
like The Rolling Stones, The Kinks,
the Small Faces, The Troggs, and The Who.
Then I started going to Rock concerts
and watched many top groups on stage
in awe I listened to guitarists like Hendrix,
Eric Clapton, and my favourite of all Jimmy Page.
For years went to the Monsters of Rock
loved the atmosphere and even the rain and mud
roughed it in a tent at Reading and Glastonbury
got absolutely soaked but it still felt good.
Me and my two mates in an old clapped out van
stacked up with rubbish food and loads of beer
but all that mattered to us was the music
even though we'd end up skint and deaf in one ear.
We met some really wonderful and interesting people
who like us were into Heavy Metal and Hard Rock
I often wonder if they're still there head banging
and it would be great if we could turn back the clock.

I Will Come Back For You

I'm sure I recognised her face
and I felt as if she knew mine too
I wanted to ask her where we'd met
but it didn't seem the right thing to do.
She then asked me how have I been?
as it had been such a very long while
now for some reason that made me feel uneasy
so I coughed nervously and tried to smile.
She went on to tell me so many things
that nearly knocked me off my feet
she even knew where I was living
and told me the name of the street.
She continued to talk all about my life
but I still never asked her how or why
and when I asked her where she had come from?
she smiled gently and pointed up to the sky.
'Are you my Guardian Angel then,
come down here to take me away
you seem to know all about me
even when I was a little boy at play? '
