Poetry

To those of you who've never read poems
there is a vacancy in your homes.
For poets dream
and poets scream
words that should be said
and never left dead.
They speak of love in artful wonder
and even love that's torn asunder.
They tell the stories that affect the people.
Their hopes, their fears,
the ageing years
their laughing times,
their weeping tears.
Poetry has its own special flow.
If you've never read it you don't know
its magic with word
not silent but heard.
To evoke in the mind
something you find
with rhythm and cadences

The Rabbit Hole

How deep does the rabbit hole go?
Too many people don't want to know.
They're afraid they might come upon
something not so nice.
Isn't it easier to just skate
over very thin ice?
No worries, no frets of any kind,
it's much more comfortable for the mind.
Don't look left. Don't look right,
just straight ahead is what's in their sight.

Now take the ones whose heads can turn,
they are the people whose minds do yearn
to see how deep the rabbit hole goes?
What they will find will surely expose

Why we are filled with insecurity?
What's at the bottom of inequality?
Why some never have prosperity?
And so much more will come to light

Regeneration

The pine needles covered the ground like a carpet
and their fragrance was all around.
The pinecones scattered here and there
punctuated the ground.
The firs were thick, stately and tall
and had grown for many a year.
They grew with the company of each other
and it did appear
that all of the forest creatures
whether large or small
were content to see the pine needles
continuously fall.
All seemed peaceful and quiet
on the forest floor,
until the animals sensed a danger.
Then there came a roar.
Most feared by all the fir trees
a spark had created a flame
and as the animals ran for their life,
nothing was the same.

The Tempest

It started out a bright sunny day
as on his boat he sailed.
The wind in his hair, the sun on his face
the salty sea air was inhaled.
He'd learned how to master the giant waves.
He'd sailed with his dad in a squall.
He'd been taught to bravely face a storm.
He lived for it since he was small.

He saw the gulls aloft in the air.
He watched their flight and thought
'I feel as free as those white-winged birds, '
happy with what he'd been taught.
The time went fast. He glanced at his watch
and then he searched the sky.
Off in the distance he saw dark clouds
and turned towards shore with a sigh.

All around darkness closed in
and the winds and rains did blow.

twas The Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas
when all through my house
not a creature was stirring,
not even a mouse.
But that would soon change
beginning at 5: 00.
For my grandkids were coming
and when they'd arrive
everything would change all in a minute.

I, in my apron with food all around,
my husband quite tired was looking and found
the cookie tray tempting. He just couldn't wait.
When I wasn't looking he stole from the plate.
The children were dressed in jolly new clothes.
Their cheeks were all rosy with red on their nose.
Their eyes were like saucers as they saw under the tree
some bright colored packages from Pop-Pop and me.

But first we must eat and fill up our belly.

precious

She fell asleep on my shoulder.
I could hear her breathing sound.
My shoulder was getting uncomfortable
but I would not shift around.
I couldn't see her face it seemed
and even if I could
I could not tell if she dreamed?

Maybe she was dreaming of way back when
she was twenty and I was twenty-two.
Could anyone dream that far back
or was her memory gone in her dream too?
Slowly she had drifted away from me
and all that we'd ever been
was no longer our reality.

The days were long. The nights were short
and the mornings were always the same.
I looked at her. She looked at me
and asked, 'What's my name? '

You're Off-Limits

If you think I'm easy
thing again big boy.
'Cause I am not a plaything.
I'm nobody's toy.

If you think I'm easy
you picked the wrong one.
'Cause I am not a plaything
to be put away when done.

'Cause all that I gave you
I gave from the heart
and all that tou took babe
you took from the start.
Now the takin' is real easy.
It's the givin' that is hard
You just can't go halfway,
you go the whole yard.
And since you couldn't do that
I've put up my guard.

Scars From A Childhood

Scars from a childhood, some visible, some not
One on my palm from a grill that was hot.
Punishment came from nothing I did.
Clenching my fist, it was something I hid.

Why world? I'm only a kid.

Scars that are hidden by clothes that I wear,
or some on my neck covered by hair.
These are excuses for frustrations at home.
They will stay with me wherever I roam.

Why world? I'm only a kid.

Never understanding just what I did do?
accepting the scars, each one as I grew,
fragmenting my mind so I could not forget
all of these scars that are still there yet.

Why world?

A Woven Tapestry

As I lie in silent repose
and contemplate all of those
who've become a part of whom I've been,
It amazes me how they all fit in.
And never once did I stop to think
that all of them became a link
in the chain encircling me.

Did they know their effect on me
or who I would become?
Or were they busy with their lives
and to mine just numb?
For when you're growing much too fast
you think their memories might not last,
but they do.

They appeared sometimes from out of the blue
and into my life they came, then flew
on to their own pursuits of the time
but made their impression to which I'm

Can't You Remember?

How often have you heard me cry?
How often have you not asked why
the tears are flowing down my face?
Maybe it's guilt you can't erase.
The lack of caring has gotten to me.
And all of those tears have got to be
drying me up inside.

We started out with so much to do.
There was never a time when tears would flow
because you always seemed to know
how to keep our love alive,
how to make our love just thrive,
making me feel like a bride.

We raised our kids and moved along
helping each other when things went wrong.
And eventually we got through it all.
When the kids moved out I recall
that what we had moved out too.
