Honorable Feelings
Before she left me,
She kissed my mother's hand
At the old church on Easter
Beside white lilies at the altar
And it seemed like inseparable love.
Every day I live with a trusting heart
Never questioning anyone's motives
Nor with fear of untruthfulness or trickery,
I enjoy the moment as if God's protective shield
Was ensuring my happiness,
There is nothing to gain with doubt.
I've been with women in the sacred moonlight
Who were laughing at me all the while,
But I was never scornful or resentful
As long as I could partake of the scent of their perfume
And notice the way they would smile.
No matter how torn down I become

Lost Again In Separate Jungles
You are a beautiful woman in a room of candles,
The aroma of jasmine drifts from the terrace,
I’ll sleep with you beneath the stars
And I’ll unlatch the shoes from your feet,
There is no place upon your small body
I would ever consider too undignified to kiss.
Loneliness has been the dark lens
Coloring your perceptions,
You have left your prayers unspoken
In loveless childhood sanctuaries
Violated by the cruel
Who taught you through violence and abuse
You can only trust yourself.
It is understood, I can’t keep you,
You have no desire for a second husband,
Even the most pleasing lovers can become brutes,
But for now I will romance your mind
And learn to delicately touch your mouth,

Ah, the Exquisite Years of This Desire
I’ve been lost on friendless streets
Wanting to cry and paralyzed at stop signs;
But I feel like I’m evolving into delicate beauty,
Becoming a flower or a Shakespeare sonnet.
If you were with me today,
It would be moonlight music on romantic avenues
And sauntering in the sun kissing your shoulders;
I have a restless heart in love with your eyes
And dreaming of your arms.
We were never really lovers,
But the one time you casually removed your blouse
In front of me like you were a runway model,
I was mesmerized by the Dior fragrance of your skin
And drunk on the loveliness of your essence.
I have no desire beyond a glass of wine
On a Parisian boulevard in the afternoon
And to eternally capture you

Ancient Bonds
May the daylight bring you hope
After a night of tears,
May a friend detain you for an hour of joy
After a season of sorrow.
Your eyes are more splendorous
Than the dancing garden flowers of your youth;
I can never see you without an obligation
Of compliments for cherished memories.
We never graced a church altar with vows,
You saved those words for another;
Any anger on my part has dissipated
Though some hurt and regrets remain.
We were once reckless children of passion
Laughing in the amusement park breeze
And swaying like trees to midnight music
That offered freedom and desire.

I’ll Return This Way Again
I adore reading Dante and Petrarch,
And I could pray to God in sacramental bliss
Sitting quietly in an orchestral hall
During a Mozart symphony,
But that is not what moves my true heart
To transforming spiritual tears.
Nor am I overpowered in my soul
By nature’s scenic beauty,
Not by ancient frozen glaciers,
Nor towering snowy peaks
That ascend to heaven,
Nor by great mountain ridges
Or by immense and expansive canyons.
My being is heroically stirred instead
By the love of loyal friends,
The kindness of strangers,
By the gentle little hands of a child.

Pink Flamingoes and White Swans
This life of perpetual goodbyes
Is so sad and funereal-parlor depressing
That it drives me mad!
I might laugh hilariously
At the open grave of a friend
And extend him a hand
And pull his dead-ass
Right out of the hole
For one more shot of whiskey
Before his eyes
Are all dirt-covered with oblivion.
When I was five,
I thought everything was going to be
Pink flamingoes and white swans,
River moonlight giving way
To golden dawns,
Beautiful girls barely-clad
With delicate smiles;
I thought I would do it all with style.

First Lover
In the summertime,
There is dancing on the urban streets,
School children and hookers,
Drug addicts and pushers,
Cutthroats and mothers
All enjoying the exquisite music
Of heroic survival and the swaying
Of lovely limbs making their way
To a myriad of destinations.
A girl is wearing a yellow skirt
Outside a getaway bar playing jazz,
Some indescribable street style
Originating in the sultry breeze,
A New Orleans of the soul
In the beatific downbeat of Detroit.
Give many widespread multiple forms of music
And some Latino children with salsa-like movements,
A seductive rhythm of urgent heartbeats,

Piss In The Face Of Destiny
Cloaked in disguises
In the alley of thieves,
I’m violently tested and seeking reprieves
From tortuous days
Of casual deceptions
And blatant lies,
But Luna and youth
Have disappeared
And I remain despised
By all the suits
And their well-paid alibis.
The loveliest women
Will spit in your eyes,
And the men I trust the most
Refuse to shave
And dress like rogues,
And my best friends
Are always broke
Looking for a lonely lady

I Still Want To Be Desperately In Love with You
I’m never prepared
For the spiritual vulnerability of love,
Never prepared for accusations,
Insinuations, jealous imagination
Running unpredictably wild
Through the numerous games lovers play,
But I still want my arms around your waist,
Lips and fingers touching your face,
I still want to see your skirt
Lying lazily at the foot of the bed,
Smell your perfume on a pillow,
Grow breathlessly excited
Whenever you enter the room,
Suicidal and depressed whenever you leave,
I still want every heartbeat to race with desire
In a chaotic search to find you when I’m alone
In a lonely city, alone and dreaming,
Every pore breathing your name,

Deities of Destiny
I’ve spent so much time
Trying to catch a lonely dream
And visiting flower markets;
I’ve sat in the moonlight
And spoken to the tall girl
At the tea house in the river town.
I’ve got so much love to confess
On summer nights
When the breeze is swaying
The lilac trees,
The promises and sacred oaths I’ve made
While dancing to the radio and flickering candlelight.
There are simple plans
That make up a life,
The church bells and wedding chapels,
Her sweet perfume on my lapel.
My soul was pure when I saw her
