Circumstances Unconcerned
The world makes sense to me
If I notice you walking on a Sunday street
And smiling like flowers in your summery dress.
But the universe is too vast
If you've made your way to the marketplace
In the cold and dirty city and forgot to take your phone.
When I can't see your eyes
Or hear the cadence of your voice,
Then I feel trapped and alone
In a world uncaring amid circumstances unconcerned.

Visions and Moonlight in The Erotic Night
Preparing and sipping mystical tea,
My head begins to swim, some added element of enlightenment,
Visions and moonlight in the erotic night,
The removal of clothing,
Tango of rhythmic bodies, arms entwined, a necklace of kisses
Beginning on the nape of the neck
Reaching around to delicate breasts,
The blending of amorous breaths,
The proud bodies of desire
Begin to shine in the midnight hour.

Never Go Astray
Lost in a dream
Walking a rainy boulevard
On St. Valentine’s Day,
I’m singing a woman’s name
While watching the headlights wink
Romantic and sweet.
I’ve been seeking
For the last two months
In a gentlemanly way
To tell you how I feel,
The music you place within me.
If I ever win your love,
I will never go astray;
Every other woman
Moving through the city
Will be invisible to my eyes.

Tearful Days
My eyes have become as languid
As wintry leafless trees
Shivering in the drifting snow.
Tearful days have reduced me
To a ghost stranger
That no one any longer knows.
To be enamored of wrists,
Perfumed and delicate,
But of which you never kiss,
Encages the heart in sorrow.
The fading sun of a dying evening
Ushers in a lonely dusk,
There is no one with these feelings
For whom I now can trust.

Adoring Mirror
The paintings in the art gallery
Remain the same
And continue to reflect
The eternal beauty
As inspiring today
As when I saw them as a child.
The ways of mirrors are not as true:
In the past a lover brushed her hair
Into the soft gaze of an adoring mirror
That seemed to love her
As much as I did,
But now the lover is gone
And only loneliness is reflected
In the same cold and unsympathetic mirror.

When the Lamps Go Out
On any midnight street
Of this morally-bankrupt city,
There is always someone
Ready to bleed and ready to die
As they bid farewell
To their inconsolable existence,
But beautiful girl,
Seek happy days and happy nights
Swaying beneath dance-floor lights
In the strong and forceful arms
Of a man who will treat you right.
Stay with me
When the lamps go out
In a moonlit room…

With Gentle Kindness
God of all-encompassing
Compassionate eyes,
Gaze softly upon
Your fragile servants
In this delicate life
Where our dreams often vanish
Like rainy summer mist
And our love falls to the ground
Like wounded flower petals,
Where our days are brief
And drenched with inconsolable tears
When the ones we love are ill
And their healing is not within our touch;
Gaze softly and treat us
With gentle kindness.

Shrine
There are men and women so noble of mind
So beautiful of heart, so pure is spiritual essence
They deserve praise and adulation but they don’t seek it
Nor do they advise it
Your true friends in this existence
Only want your happiness and wellbeing
Your ability to find and express love
The real teachers of the soul
Want you to discover your own potential goodness
Rather than making a shrine to theirs

Too Lonely And Sad
When you become too lonely and sad,
That is when you disappear
Without a trace:
Ambrose Bierce became
A wandering ghost in Mexico;
Hart Crane, probably in tears,
Jumped into the ocean;
Sylvia Plath kissed her children
And then was no more.
So every day I’m singing one more hymn
And saying one more prayer,
I’m learning to weather storms.
I love Jesus,
But I don’t want to see him too soon.

When I Miss You, Sweetheart, I Try Not to Feel Dejected
When friends disappoint you,
Remember you have undoubtedly
Disappointed your friends;
When lovers betray you,
Know for certain, your heart
Has not always been faithful;
In this life, as humans,
We often suffer psychic wounds
That feel like walking death
And undeniable despair;
We have to assume,
We will venture again
Out into the sunlight
And discover our higher purpose
And greater happiness.
