A Secret Code
Beauty is a mystery,
A secret code.
One could listen to Mozart
Or gaze at Van Gough’s Starry Night for eternity
And never understand
The depth and immensity
Of the revelation
Or conceive of the place
From whence such inspiration emanates.
And sometimes this is the experience
With a woman’s eyes
Or watching her hands in the sunlight
Placing flowers in a vase.

Beautiful With Sadness
Dawn departures
In the rain,
Bus terminal kisses
For long journeys
With arrested love,
Delicate poetry crawls
Down along lonely and dirty avenues.
In afternoon restaurants,
We gather ourselves
Like parking meter coins
Or a waitress’ tips
And still come up short
With our meager ambitions.
At dusk,
A serenade from birds,
This life is beautiful with sadness.

Meet At Dawn and Kiss
The Loneliness is unrelenting
Like the endless stretch of highway
Leading to the city
Where you reside.
I drive weary hour
After weary hour,
The road signs blur,
Lost in the rain showers
Of my unhappy eyes.
I don’t know when
I’ll hold your hand
In a flowery field.
Currently, I’m climbing
Mountains of despair;
But one day,
We’ll meet at dawn and kiss.

Abiding Love
If you roam this busy earth alone,
How will you soak up the sunlight
On an exotic beach and smile?
If you’re eccentric to a fault
Who will understand the wisdom of your mind
Or the heart of your compassion?
If you’re captivated
By a woman’s eyes or the sound of her voice
But never express your feelings to her,
How will you ever live with an abiding love?

Causalities of Love
Casualties of love:
The broken heart,
The weary soul that sinks,
The formerly happy rhythms
Of a positive life
Turning slow and morose.
If a friend
Mentions he saw you
And says her face is thin
And the brightness
Of her eyes
Has faded
Into tears of regret,
My own sadness
Will become intense.
One day,
We’ll meet
Simply for tea,

Mantra of Gratitude
If girls stop smiling
At the malls on Saturday,
If beautiful cats on porches
And window sills
Suddenly disappear,
If orchestral music is never heard again
In concert halls among special friends,
If someone removes
My lovely Emily Dickinson;
Then I’ll sit down quite calmly
And peacefully meditate a mantra of gratitude
For the amount of time I knew these things.

Among the Poets
T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound
Are perfect;
Amber Lee is nearly perfect;
Tiffany is stunning;
Sherrie is astounding and cool;
Mary is a natural woman
With dirty hands and a sweet heart;
John Newton, Sonja, and Jacob Hassler
Are all quite lovely!
Uriah has to persevere
Through self-loathing and through tears!
But Arsiema is in Eritrea
Possibly saying prayers for me.

Unwelcome Journey
You’re driving home to New Jersey
With a heart full of fear and sadness.
A year ago, your father drove to see you,
His old eyes still bright with vibrant life;
Now you make a trip you don’t want to make
Back to your girlhood home
That you fear is vanishing forever.
On such occasions, I hope prayers
Fly into the heart of God,
I’ll try to make this trip with you

Thin Summer Dress
After the party laughter,
Her lips are still red
As she walks beneath
The soft glow of moonlight.
Lasciviously, she smiles at me
Knowing I already adore her
Even more than my wounded eyes
Could ever reveal
Gazing upon her
Like a pious monk
Upon a sacred icon.
Her thin summer dress
Tenderly breaks my heart,
But this is the type of suffering
In which I desire to linger.

Leave the Past Behind
When the eyes
Of honest vulnerability are opened,
One will follow
The soundless voice of God
And depart from Egypt
For a renewing place
Like when the child Jesus
Returned to Israel
From Joseph’s protective exile.
Undeviating Light,
May we find our true place
In this existence,
May we leave the past behind
And move forward into the happiness
Of our spiritual destiny.
