Yellow Birds

I’ve been broken
Like a lonely dream
Looking for a mind to enter,
But I follow the footsteps of love
Through the crowded halls of hate.
I’m a patient man,
From every act of unkindness,
One day, I will escape—
Meet me at dawn,
We’ll gaze at yellow birds,
Our affection will be new
Like the first day of creation.

Disco Rhythmic Blues

I want to dance
In the lonely night
Disco rhythmic blues,
Sister, take my hand,
I’m a dead man
With lead feet
Sinking into the quick sand
Of oblivion and despair,
Tell me that you care
And that we’ll ride
Our bikes into the sunset
Of lost joys
Totally divorced
From the pointless guilt
Of accumulated years of regret.

Finish After Lunch

We have this hour
To light candles
And to open the widows
Invitingly to spring breezes;
After that, we have eternity
To shut our eyes
In windowless coffins.
Everyday our life
Flashes before our eyes,
We must find joy and wonder
Before the undertaker
Mindlessly considers us
Merely another assignment
To finish after lunch.

In Ancient, Tranquil Meadows

Yellow birds in the green summer grass
And sunlight falling softly upon marigolds,
You could close your eyes and dream
You were an Indian
In ancient, tranquil meadows.
Rain dances and peyote visions
Create prayers and mystic wisdom.
There are certain corridors of time
That transport you back
To pristine and ageless beauty.

Dreams of Hemingway

When the streets stagger
In drunken defeat;
When all the romantic singers
Howl beneath lonesome bridges;
When my friends have disappeared
To distant cities or unkempt graves;
When the innocence of children
Or child-like hearts
Have been violated by parents or priests,
I have dreams of Hemingway
And the dawn of oblivion.

Excruciatingly Slow-Motion Life

Lovers get left behind
In the memory haze
Of a difficult life.

You may marry someone
Who treats you sweetly and kind,
But the passion isn’t there
Because he’s not the one.

When too many days have passed
And the clock is running out of time
For the possibility of our romance,
You will realize
I was the man you loved.

Secret Codes

We drank
From magical fountains
In childhood parks,
We smiled
On the merry-go-round
And heard
The illuminating chorus
From jubilant birds.

We spent
A dream-like day together
Holding hands in the sunlight;
And when evening arrived,
We kissed and gazed
Into mystical constellations
Deciphering secret codes
To eternal love.

You're Naturally Good If You Know It

Why not just have a kind heart?
There is nothing to gain in meanness,
There is no salvation in alienating yourself from love,
Hate will only buy you a heart attack or an ulcer,
Anxiety will only make your hair gray,
Stepping on other people's souls
Will merely give you an unpleasant face
And hasten old age and the grave.

Pinpoint Precision

I expect my eternity
To be staggering in the rain
In a desolate city
Where soulless women
Have been stripped
Of their pleasant jewelry,
Their hair no longer soft
To a lover’s hand,
Their hearts devoid of understanding.

I don’t know if Dante
Included this in his Inferno,
But God tortures us all
With pinpoint precision.

Italian Poet

Unrelenting dark rain
Drenches the downcast heart;
But the days would seem pleasant
And not sorrow-tinged
If I could only forget
The allure of her eyes
And the scent of her hair:
Then I would not dream foolish dreams
And I would not reel in such despair.

Lovesick for prolonged months,
I fear I’m becoming an Italian poet.
