Not a Father’s Son
When I was born
You were forlorn.
I was not a father’s son.
I was a bawling girl.
Didn’t even have a curl.
I was not a father’s son.
As time progressed,
In lace I dressed.
I was not a father’s son
I was your only child.
My disposition was mild.
I was not a father’s son.
Did you wish I was a boy?
Would that bring you joy?
I am not a father’s son.

If I Dreamed
If I dreamed a dream
To top all others
It would include
Peace among brothers
If I dreamed a dream
That would last forever
It would include
Success in each endeavor
If I dreamed a dream
Of unfaltering love
It would include
The sunshine from above
If I dreamed a dream
Of never growing old
It would include
A kind heart of gold

Prey Play
With an open door it starts
A flash of cat darts
Scampering out with a swing
Spurring the motion of things
Never content in a single place
A detective investigating a case
Crouching in a frozen pose
Ears cocked while in repose
Instinctive radar set in motion
As concentration controls emotion
Refraining from a revealing drool
A graduate from predatory school
On a mission to be completed
Never again to be repeated
Pounce… butterfly wings flutter
Evading paws…followed by a mutter

Lasting Impressions
I am absorbed into memorable hues;
glowing radiant colors that express
a loving warmth and the breath of life...
A sensation that makes me feel blessed
Traveling to a land that is refreshing...
a realm where everything is youthful
The joy of the moment stirs an awareness
in my soul… reaching the peak of peaceful
During hours of the day sonnet-like sounds
create a rhythm that carries me like a stream
to a destination that continues to flow
within the consciousness of a wakeful dream

A Dark Chocolate Remedy
Dark chocolate is very beneficial
It is high in antioxidants that push a button
improving a deficient immune system…
also has flavonoids to help the brain function
When the elderly drink a cup of cocoa…
their cognitive powers seem to be improved
The scientific studies show promise...
a dark chocolate remedy could be approved
Wouldn't it be great if all it took was chocolate
to eliminate dementia and paralyzing strokes
It would be an agreeable and mouthwatering
treatment…retaining memories for aging folks

A Little Laughter
Laughter shows no disrespect
to the memories of those we've lost…
sadness is a fact that will remain
An absence creates a vast emptiness
when a love that was shared is severed…
laughter is a small way to ease the pain
Share a little laughter with a friend
even when shadows of sorrow
are laden in the clouds of rain
A little laughter sparingly shared
can bring warm rays of sunshine
breaking through… keeping us sane
Loved ones who have passed
would want us remember this…
In their memory... enjoy life again

Winter Wind
Winter is beginning with winds that howl
bringing flakes of whirling white snow...
Taking a pause…then gaining intensity
Giving speed to dead leaves as it goes
Gusts of strength so powerful they break
age bearing limbs…stripped down by velocity
Up rooting trees that have stood for decades
Tall trunks topple to the ground mercilessly…
The frigid sting of the wind continues threaten
Its harsh tremors are impossible to ignore
Living beings seek shelter as hearts palpitate
Hoping the wind will ease and hush its roar

Emergence
Youthful energy rising to the surface
Searching for an identity to claim
Treading life’s substance… in a race
Looking for a way to gain rewards and fame
Suspended in a hubbub of restraints
Filled with curiosities that beckon and tempt
A mutinous voice asks questions and has complaints
From a parental leash teenagers wish to be exempt
The world is new and they have all the facts
Don’t want to hear about caution or dangers
Discovering there is an inner nerve that reacts
To meddling parents that now seem like strangers

July Memories
It was the Forth of July
fireworks with rocket sounds
were brightening the dark sky
Small children drew circles
in the air with hot tipped wires
spraying snapping stars
Sparklers were thrown into the air
falling to earth with a curved decent
mimicking the plunge of comets
Landing upon dry grass
quickly starting a spreading fire
frantically feet began to stomp
Putting out crackling flames
extinguished by hot soles
hearts were rapidly pounding

Growing Upward
A small tree began to grow
Many impressions were pressed
Into the sapling’s brow and soul
Some gladden…others distressed
Its roots deepen and limbs strengthen
Innocently growing in the shadows
Hearing whispers from grown trees
Seeking an ideal model to follow
Wondering how it would be
To learn without a slanted view
Witnessing life freely with honesty
Deciding for it’s self what to do
Stretching high…reaching the sky
The warming sunlight embraces
Encouraging nest building and song
Robust branches tower over dark places
