A Meaningless Poem
Sounds
When they follow you like dogs
In the forest of silence,
Itch-afflicted, skeletal loneliness
When it litters
Offspring of dreams
In shallow ponds of evenings;
The crows perched
On branches of the sun
Then fly away.

A Song Before Victorious Enemy
Some flowers here are mine
Write these on the trees
Some dreams here are mine
Write these on the walls
Some songs here are mine
Write these on the swords
Some people here are mine
Write them also on the gallows.

Sleepwalker
There should be someone
To move into our sleep
And give the dreams a meaning
And say,
Come, we altogether go
Through the night forest
To look for the moon
It walks alone in its sleep
Let it not fall in the swamp
The child is so displeased
We have to bring it
Back home.

Bon Voyage Verse
Whistles the train
Boring a hole
Into the midriff of the still air.
Bon voyages
Raised hands
Waving handkerchiefs
Pledges
Promises
Prayers for a safe return
Suns
Of kisses
Freezing on lips.
Unbetoken'd
Eyes moisten
With dew drops.
Whistels the train
Boring a hole

Crab Nebula
Today is the day
When you came into being
For earthly sight seeing
From motherly heaven
To this terrestrial
Vertigo of seven
You travelled 5000 light years
Muizza, my dear of all dears
In this constellation of stars
You are the one all at pars!
(Dedicated to my niece Muizza Abbas on her 24th. Birthday on 14th. May,2009)

Archaeology
Paths
Winding their way
stop short at cave openings.
Words
Written on plaques
Bear witness to the unseen past
Crying themselves hoarse
In deserted towns
Crazy-like strike against the walls.
Far far away
Beyond the rim of lost civilizations
Silence suddenly rebounds
And reverberates.

A Poem Dedicated To My Murderer
If you strike a dagger in my chest
Do ponder
Air has no body.
Air is flow
Of running seas of life
It's a long story
Which has no beginning
And no end.
If you strike a dagger in my chest
Do ponder
Air is immortal
Air is mother's pat
Air is sound of a lullaby
Air is a prayer
Out of the mouth of babes!

Rain
When it rains
Roads, trees, houses, birds
Fences, lawns, porches, terraces
Flowerpots, climbers, flowers, windows
Words, books, poems, conversation
Dreams and faces
Sun and shades
All get wet
Memories are inundated
Life spans turn into ephemeral moments
Dry eyes are filled with water
(and are washed clean)
When it stops
Winds start blowing.

In The Dream Territory Of A Woman
In the dream territory of a woman
light and darkness
merge and unite
In the dream territory of a woman
all things ensue
except for man
In the dream territory of a woman
through the open window
rain enters, and
the breeze teases the curtains
In the dream territory of a woman
night passes on
but never rises the sun; and
there is an endless wait for the morning

A Proscribed Poster
Dreams
Insecticides sprayed
On stinking water in our streets.
Eyes of coming generations
Empty tins in our kitchens
Of dough, ghee and kerosene.
Dancer
Starvation dancing
In our courtyards.
Thirst
Our historical legacy.
Words
Prisoners of curricula
For you who read scripts.
We all
Prisoners of unseen dreams
For you who look for interpretations.
