Mamta Agarwal

A New Journey...

As the youngest spread
Wings in the literal sense
And waved both hands
After clearing the security check,

We both waved back and sighed
And evaded looking in the other’s eyes.
Then I quietly slipped my hand
In his arm, and pushed my brand

New bag on wheels towards
The domestic departure lounge.
To catch our flight to Goa, the land
Of magic, beaches and sand.

To get reacquainted all over once again,
And a new journey of new possibilities began.

Benediction

I stirred, moaning turned on my side, feeling a bit wane
Someone knocked… oh; it was rain at my windowpane.
My eyes drifted languorously to clock in the night light.
Still haunted by the demons, that tormented me all night.

Soon rain withdrew, clouds departed, watched blue sky
Getting into my jogging gear, I felt a surge of energy.
Went to banks of Yamuna, to watch it sparkle at Sun rise
Did droplets drip from Neem tree as benediction to exorcise….

Preservation or Wastage

Preserved decrepit, deserted
Ancient monuments,
Protected with barbed fence
Where only
Pigeons and thieves build
Their nests.

To educate
Young India
About its heritage?

Migrants,
With dreams
Of better prospects,
Live on pavements
Or make shift
Tenements,
Perish
Due to extremes of climate.

Daisies

I went to the florist,
And asked for long lasting flowers.
He pulled out a bunch
And proudly said just arrived from
Bangalore.

I couldn’t believe what I saw,
Dainty petals colour of new born baby’s cheeks,
And inside lime green.

I picked the whole lot
And put them in a pot,
Every time I pass
I just have to pause.

They are still fresh after a week
As promised,
The colour scheme truly epitomises
The great artist at work.
I silently pay my

A Shift in Perception-4

God,
At times I feel
You are playing
A practical joke
Just to poke
Fun at me.

Perhaps
To make me see
That I need to lighten up,
And just worry too much.
And abuse
Your gift of imagination
For no rhyme or reason.

Or to provoke
Me to think
Out of the box
And do some
Mental gymnastics

Love needs no Language

Love transcends
The barriers of language.

I learnt
From a seven year old
Dutch angel.

If she felt
Love and happiness,
She just ran to me
With arms outstretched
And held me in a tight embrace.

I felt
Eye contact,
A gentle nudge
A warm hug,
Slipping hand
In hand.

Natural tints and shades! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I plucked some flowers
Of Frangipani and bougainvillea
From the garden,
And a few variegated leaves
Of delicate caladium
And syngonium;

Excited took them to
The guy who dyes
My chiffon saris and tops.
Can you mix these tints
And shades?

Mam, he said
I humbly admit,
I can’t make any promise
These are God made.

I use vegetable
And flower dyes.

A Day in a Hospital Ward

Looking out of the window,
I saw the birds flying.
Seeing them so free
I felt like crying.

Then a ‘voice’ said,
You are not here to stay.
So bear with the loneliness
Just for a day.

I got up and stood
Near the window,
And opened it to breathe
The fresh air from the meadow.

As it filled my lungs,
I began to feel light
And no longer envied
The birds their flight.

In Silence

Our eyes met,
You held my hand
And gently
Tenderly
Pushed away a strand
From my forehead.

I blushed
And felt the blood rush
To my cheeks.
I couldn’t speak,
Slowly
You
Pulled me to your chest
And we embraced.

I could feel my heartbeat race.
Your silence
Was eloquent.
I felt

A Promise I Made Myself...

I have promised myself to keep my face
Towards the light, even if faint and pale
For it gives me, even if brief, a respite
From despair, grief—human plight…

Even when darkness and night descends
And I slowly crawl into my cold bed,
I try to think of now extinct fire flies
Alive and glowing in my mind’s eye…

Oh, pain give up, I refuse to succumb
Or hug you tight to my heaving bosom
Or wear you like a shroud or veil
I’ll rise like the Sun, for sure without fail…
