A Sleep
She lay sleeping
like Beauty
awaiting a kiss.
Leaning close
I feel the warmness
of her breath,
her eye lids
flutter occasionally
in butterfly sleep;
up they flick
and down again
to pause
and then
flutter again.
The shoulders bare
below spaghetti straps,
the neck
in its curvature

A Kiss In The Dusty Road
The last kiss lay in the road
dusty and memory-filled
and I on my endless trek
paused more out of respect
and morbid passion-regret
asked my self
shall I retrieve it,
a curiosity,
inspect it
as lost artifice
or continue to tread my road
to endless, endings
even I know
lead no where?
How many last kisses
I ask
inhabit my roads
even I know

A Soul Kissed
Oh, to be soul-kissed
the deep kiss;
mouth brushing past
parted lips.
I can feel my body
unraveling
anticipation screaming
on Pouty Canvass Crimson.
I can feel the gathering,
we two crouching
uplifting;
Raptures shooting.
Touch we
the first touch
electric quiverings;
inward breath surging,
dizzying availings,

The She in Me
She said wearily
'I am trapped
in the Chain of Desperation
trying to break free;
my mother passed it along
to me,
and her mother to her and on
down to me.
One destroyed soul
seeks its own repair
but only partial healing
is possible for most of us.
And as luck would have it
we fail more times than we succeed;
sometimes consoling ourselves
with the belief
'at least I am better than She.'

The Altar
My grandmother had an altar
in the middle of the living room;
Mother Mary statute four feet tall.
On the table it rose seven feet
towering over all.
In an family emergency
a candle was lit
she would kneel;
pray-
candle flickering
on her face-
lit like heaven
was supplying
the electricity;
so serene that
face
and most often

Love's Testing
If my pain is your pleasure
then I will continence it
although I know I shouldn't.
If you in loving me
draw blood
I will wipe it clean
gauze and bandage it.
If my pleasure is to allow you
this abandonment
from previous
hurts you've endured,
if this then is the price
I must pay
then I am willing to expend
that coin to see where
all of this new love is going.
I too,

A Step
There are these steps
which rule my life;
I look behind
and see them:
pathways I've taken,
impressions here and there
from the baby ones
to my teens
all there in the sand
trailing behind me.
I've stepped up to challenges;
my first apartment
my first home
career and children
all steps along my way;
I see the future ones
arrayed in front of me
marker points to strive for.

The Flask of Time
There is a single leaf flying
in this my autumn gloaming,
a leaf fluttering light
as if being orchestrated
by your words in flight
rushing to my inner ear;
'I have fallen in love
with another you said.'
My leaf stammered,
swaying in its downward flight
unable to remount the tree,
terrified to crash the ground
suspended forever there
as was also true of your words;
better to not reach my inner ear
better to not have my leaf touch down dead.
Between us all these years
neither war, nor peace;

December-In-May Marriages.
Misplacements:
Oh, If I only had the wisdom
of my later years
coupled with the enthusiastic non-wisdom of my youth.
If only I had my twenties body
with the passion of my fifties.
Oh, if only I had the child-rearing insights
of my later years
and the energy of that 23 year old.
Ah men, if I really chose the dashing one
I so loved at 18
would I have the devotion and dependability
of the 55 year old?
What I need
apparently
is a 55 year old

Sugar Curls
You can count the stars
and the count will be incomplete.
You can count times
I've looked for you
in dreams
I've dreamed.
You can count the hours
I've marked,
my stomach knotting
etching time across my heart
since I've seen your face.
I know how many steps
to your house;
your phone number backwards;
the colors in your eyes,
