Lonnie Hicks

Paranoid

I picked him up-
just released from
mental health treatment-

they'd drugged him
to some nth degree
and I could feel him
looking out the car window
deciphering hospital life
from the outside highway realities.

We pass road kill
and he yelled stop! stop!

I stopped, backed up and he got out
to have a look.

A dead cat, mauled
and bloody.
He got down on the road

Faithing

Belief and Faith come naked from the night
having no origins,
no obvious intents.

They fasten themselves onto the loving heart
and providing it the nourishment
nothing else abides.

So how can you believe what you cannot see
what is so much against the odds, they said.
But all great things Faith says were deemed
impossible at the beginning.

There was Edison, computers, religion itself
all would have been doomed if the initiators
believed those that said they were not possible.

But possible they were because of that slender thread
that said
'No matter what they think,

Bitter-Tasting

I'm in between,
bitter tasted;
overcome by my own nature,
but, unrepentant, I still am
by choice and circumstance.

I step upon my own fate
plunge holes in my own ship
live with storms and tumult
I alone create.

I'm in between
and bitter tasting
overcome by my own nature.
But unrepentant I still am
by choice and circumstance.

I've been wrong many times
and humble enough to know,
but alone,

The One

'Come over here' he said

'Let's you and me
talk private.

I've noticed you
noticing me
and I wonder if
that is illusion
and am I making it up
or if it is true
and you did
notice me.

If not fine
I'm gone.

If so
let's talk.
What is the truth?

Love Me True

She said'
I want you sweeter than sugar
darker than night
and capable of making me
take delight
in what I shouldn't.

He said:
I want you lovely,
a she-devil at night
and give me what you
shouldn't;
a cat
with velvet claws.

He said:
I want you chaste
enjoy the chase
and proclaim
you have never been caught.

Odd Hour Lovers

I’ve loved so many of you
recklessly,
no olfactory enough
no orchid too sweet
no garden bloomed enough,
no grandeur fitting.

I've built altars to you
strung participles from my heart,
spun putty soft evocative usherings,
countenanced every silver emotion band-aid
to be stripped from me
as I sought to wade deep depths into you;
I have been thrill-kissed, -dive bombed-
and surrendered all to you.

I’ve had magic walks;
idyllic and ebullient,
stuttering and delicious;

Former and Latter

If I Weep,
I want
it to be Torrents;

if I Cry, ,
make it Tsunami;

if I Lust
have me be Ravenous;

If Sad,
have my eyes
Glow in the Dark.

Empathy for me
must be Complete;

Love All Consuming;
Pity must be
the Heights of Grief;

Grandma's Silver

You met me
and I had given up.

You met me
and I took out the good china
from Grandma's hutch;

her gold-plated knives, forks and spoons
and the silver,
toasting you
that summer night
had both of us playing house.

I was the gourmet cook,
you were eating hearty
and wolfed down lustily my heart;

made me forget giving up
for giving it up
happily;

On The Brink

There may be some iron reason
some beastly words
which will hover above
and unconfound my mind
cleanse away uncertainty
allow me the peace of a predictable tomorrow.

I am hungry for that peace
and terrified chaos is my inevitable destiny.

Some days I feel the slippery slide beneath me
balanced only by blinding faith
rescued at times by the kiss from you;
other times lashed to hopes and plans
I stagger through
ignorant, not sure, full of guarded faith
pregnant with determinations, a pocketful
of supports and dreams
wild resentments and hidden desires.

Happiness

Happiness in the dictionary pages

ricochets between
hap and hapless,

good luck and bad
Fortuna, Joy, Felicity

Aptness and Prosperity-
all aligned.

Happiness it seems
Has nothing to do with fair and unfair.
right and wrong
it is hit or miss
luck and unlucky-
vagaries.

Indigestible this.
