John Thorkild Ellison

A German Soldier's Lament

I moved around, below, above,
And up and down, and back and through,
And all the while I thought of you
And the tender swastikas of love.

Gestapo kisses everywhere
Had filled my heart with such despair
I did not know just what to do,
Was I a Nazi or a Jew?

They tortured me for all my sin
And sealed me in a silent room,
Was it an oven or a tomb?
They made a lampshade from my skin.

They nailed me to an Iron Cross
And told me I must face the loss
Of everything I thought was true
And so I sold my soul to you.

Breaking Up

What will you do when your love really ends?
Can you rely on your so-called friends?
Or is it a question of 'Well, it just depends
On whether I can get a baby-sitter'?
No wonder you feel so f*cked-up and bitter,
Your girl two-timed you and you wanted to hit her -
That's unacceptable and she'd call the police,
You're angry and scared, you just want some peace
To work it all out and find a solution,
There's no need to start a damn revolution!
She was always so 'clever', always knew best,
But from her innocent smiles you would never have guessed
Her talent for b*tching and being a pest,
No wonder her mum and dad were distressed!
She liked to make out she was the boss
So ditching her now's not exactly a loss,
But will anything ever be the same as the bliss
Of the fire and the passion of her first sweet kiss?
Look at it now, Spring's tenderest flower,
It blooms and it withers in the space of an hour.

An Apology to My Lover

If looks could kill I'd soon be dead
Because of all the hurtful things I've said -
I know that I have treated you badly
But you're still the girl I loved so madly;
I'm really sorry for what I've done,
If this is a battle, then you have won -
I'm quite disgusted with the way I've been
And I don't blame you for calling me mean.
But what can I do to make amends?
I wish that we could still be friends,
Please, please forgive me, give me a chance
To turn the tables, ignite romance
Where everything seems dead and grey
Our love must shine another day!
I know I've got a bloody nerve,
You're much too good for me, I don't deserve
Your gentle ways, you're far too nice
And your love can lead me to Paradise.
Some men are born to break the rules
And some of them are bloody fools,

A Pillar of Society

You're afraid of sinners, but please don't panic,
This guy's so wholesome he's almost organic!
He goes to church, has a steady job,
Stands out a mile from the common mob,
He'd never consider a dodgy deal,
Anything underhand would NOT appeal
To him, he's as straight as a die,
Salt of the earth, the old school tie
Is a symbol of his quality,
He's thoroughly honest and seems to be
The sort of man you could always trust,
Sound in his judgement and utterly just.
How shocked I was when this upright male
Was suddenly locked up in jail!
It seems he had an unspeakable vice,
I can hardly tell you - it isn't nice!
He collected pictures of underage boys,
When it hits the papers there'll be a hell of a noise! !
It goes to show that a person's face
Can deceive us all, show not a trace

A Poor Man's Blues

'I'll raise your pay by £5 a week' -
Who is he kidding, the man's a freak!
I've a mortgage to pay, children to feed
But this guy won't help a worker in need.

He'll go off sailing in his fancy yacht
As happy as Larry for all he's got,
Or play some golf on his country estate -
You can't deny it's an enviable fate!

But I've got no money to pay the bills
And my wife's overdosed on her bottle of pills,
And I'm limping around in my second-hand shoes
And feel like a blind man singing the blues,
With a tear in my pants and holes in my socks
And a one-way ticket to a cardboard box! !

The boss ain't like us ordinary folk,
Is he even human, or is that just a joke?
I've beeb thinking lately, though it might sound mad,

Alone

I was running, running scared
When I realised you no longer cared,
Something had made you change your mind,
Your eyes were cold, your heart turned blind,
You never spared a single thought
About the money or the gifts I'd bought,
I didn't want your gratitude,
No, not at all, but your attitude
Surprised me and I wondered why
I couldn't do anything else but cry.
I'd always been a lonely man -
It just turned out that way - I didn't plan
My loneliness, it simply came
And there wasn't anyone I could blame,
But when we met I thought at last
That solitude would be a thing of the past,
I was so happy, I felt more joy
Than I'd ever felt since I was a boy!
I didn't understand love could end,
That I would be left without a friend.

A Poet Goes to the Doctor

'Doctor, doctor! Can't you help me please?
I'm suffering from a dreadful disease,
A rhyming disorder, and what makes it worse,
I can't help speaking or writing in verse! !

These sleepless nights of alliteration
Are causing me such consternation,
The assonance too is making me ill -
Please give me a potion or some kind of pill! ! '

'Calm down, my friend, no need to worry, '
The doctor replied, 'Don't be in a hurry, -
I've got the answer, - a good dose of prose
By the dullest of authors, everyone knows,
Will speedily remedy your inspiration
By giving you TWO YEARS of verbal constipation! !

You can say goodbye to your fluent verse
As your poetry goes from bad to worse,
Don't change your mind and run to your Muse,

Dumping You Feels Great! !

Quite frankly, I'm sick of your attitude,
You take my friendship for granted
And never show the least bit of gratitude
For anything I've done, you're just
A user, and I was very foolish to trust
You at all. You fill me with disgust! !
So far as I'm concerned you can pack
Your bags and leave, you won't be missed! !
Go and hang out with that slut you kissed
Last night at the party. You were pissed
And I know what you're like. You can't resist
A piece of skirt. You like to flirt
With all the younger girls. It makes you think
You're irresistible, give you a drink
Or two and there you are again - Prince Charming! !
Such conceit, it's really quite alarming
To think I fell for it myself! !
I suppose I felt I was left on the shelf
And you would cure my loneliness,
Instead of which it's ended in a mess -

Love Turns to Hate

I'm sorry, my love, you made a mistake
When you sent me a piece of your wedding cake,
You should never have married that awful fake,
That all-time loser, what a dreadful mistake! !
Did you think I'd understand? For Heaven's sake! !
Every night I lie there, wide awake,
Cursing and knowing my heart will break,
'Cos there's only so much a man can take.
I hope you're happy, but when you've read
This message I've sent you, I'll be stone dead!
I used to think there's a purpose in life
And how I dreamed you would be my wife!
But I was a fool, and life's absurd
And the stupidest thing I've ever heard
Is the daft idea we could be 'just friends' -
No! This is the way the comedy ends!
Don't put any flowers at the side of my grave
Or shed any tears, no, try to 'be brave',
I'll be coming back in the dark midnight,
A hungry ghost, and you'll get a fright,

A Child Of Satan

I curse the sarcastic sun
And the mockery of flowers!
Everywhere I turn I see the children run
And play - they're having such fun
Making the most of the long summer hours,
Everyone
Is happy now - I seem to be the only one
With darkness in my heart
Where, cold as a tomb,
I nurse my vile, unforgiving thoughts,
My evil spawn in this hidden, deadly womb
Where the plan begins to grow
That will shatter all their happiness
And seal their doom.
A creature such as me
Should not be allowed to walk this earth,
Should not be allowed to BE! !
And yet the fools have set me free
And I will teach them a lesson.
