The Music Box

On her dresser sat a music box.
It had been there for many a year.
Given to her by her special one
and now it brought a tear.

For the song it played was as old as she
and she was eighty-three.
Surprisingly it had never worn down
and she'd wind it everyday
It brought to mind the very first time
that she'd ever heard it play.

It was on a Christmas Eve he came
and handed her his gift.
She opened it up and saw the box
and she saw his smile lift.

He took her hand as the music played and held her in his arms.
Hummimg and swaying silently, enjoying all her charms.
Inside the box was his gift to her,

The Eye Of The Storm

The eye of the storm is quiet and still.
Don't be afraid of that.
The rage that encircles the stillness within
is unrestricted combat
that is being fought by mindless zombies
marching off to war,
that can never be won by an animated corpse
dying again and what for?

To protect the homeland is what they're told,
a story that they believe.
And so their heads are shaved and they're taught to kill
for the young are so naive.
They believe their leaders and never question
the words, 'Thou shalt not kill.'
And so our youth are once again
caught marching downhill.

Where are the preachers that taught these young men
the commandments, words of God.

I Had A Piece Of Heaven

I lost my heart when I lost you
and now I'm lonely
and feelin' blue.
There's no one to hold me, not like you
and now that we're over,
now that we're through
I'm so far from heaven.
There's no place for me.
I'm so far from heaven
and where I want to be.

'Cause I had a piece of heaven
and the stars were in my eyes.
Now that little piece of heaven
I could never recognize.
For I lost my heart
when I lost you
and now I'm feelin' lonely
and feelin' blue.
'Cause that little piece of heaven

A Star Speaks

In this universe so vast and wide
why do we humans run and hide
from the fact that there just might be
other beings different than we?
So many stars up in the skies
shining down like so many eyes
look right down and say to you
'There are others out there
that are in my view.'

Do not fear the multitudes of others
that just like you have sisters and brothers.
The day will arrive when all will say
if only you weren't so far away
you could teach us how to live with love
and how not to kill a soul.
We have never learned that here on earth
and still we play that role.

As a star that's shining in the night

Visionaries

America was a dream.
America was a vision
Made by believers
Who made a decision
To break away from old mistakes
And start something new.
It did not come easy.
The believers were just a few.

But it only takes a few
To believe in what is right.
And so America started
But not without a fight.
It was about taxes
Just like it is today.
But instead of King George
It’s the politicos taking our pay.

So where do we stand now?
We’re in the same boat.

What Has Changed

The world as I saw it as a youth
changed slowly in my mind.
It was warm and kind and friendly,
everything I wished to find.
The warmth of the sun,
never feared.
The kindness of people,
to me endeared.
The friendliness of strangers,
volunteered.
All of this my eyes did see.

The world as I saw it in mid-life
changed quicker in my mind.
It was filled with doubt and sometimes grief,
not something I expected to find.
The insecurities of life,
to me all new.
The losses that occur,
to me so blue.

My Father's Persistence

Was there rain coming down that day?
I really can't remember.
My mother says it was cold and dreary
on that day in December.
Was I welcomed onto this earth
as I took my first breath in?
My father wanted a boy to raise.
Should I have stayed where I had been?

Gradually he accepted a little girl
and held me on his knee.
He played LP records for hours
and I inhaled the harmony.
My mother says he was obsessed with this
and thought I should be left alone.
But his persistence through my first two years
paid off with each new tone.

By age four I was playing the piano
and my father praised God.

Ode To Life

Oh to be born and accept the forgetting
into a life of stress and fretting
does not seem fair
since we forget from where
we came.

We take on the trials of life on earth
and soon cannot remember
what peace there was before we came.
A died out ember
for me in December.

Awakened to a new purpose for now
and so we finally learn somehow
to encompass life,
all joy and strife
and live.

We find new joys in girls and boys
playing with their earthly toys.

Make a Vow

Can you remember who you were
when you knew but this?
How it was to find yourself
deep in heavenly bliss?
And if you can't why the tears?
The weeping does no good.
All it does is prolong the quest,
prolong the years of yearning
to return to your childhood.

For as a child your mind
is so unfettered and free.
The possibility is stronger
that allows you to see
the time that you felt your heart
filled with love and desire
from a love so wondrous you know somehow
that it lives again in the now.
And so you make a vow.

Now And Then

NOW

Sometimes we feel so awfully tired
and lay atop the bed.
We wait for sleep to find us
and cradle our heavy head.
But sleep doesn't seem to come anymore
as easy as it once did.
For Pandora's box, filled with its woes
is trying to escape its lid.

THEN

Our youthful bodies would shut right down'from all our tireless play.
Our minds were peaceful and quiet
from simple thinking all day.
The sandman would sprinkle sand
and bring to us sweet dreams.
We were dead to the world in our bed
and never fretful it seems.
