Modern Day Poet

I am the modern day poet you know
that must make words that easily flow.
For to just present words that ramble on
is to yield forth words that soon are gone.

They're gone from the listener and reader too,
who cannot reason or cannot view
how the words just seem to sit on a page
allowed to sit and yellow with age.

Words must be caressed and also thrive
to take on rhythms which come alive,
alive in the memory that through the ear
has taken it in and holds it dear.

And so in each poem I have my say.
And so in each poem my words do sway
back and forth like a front porch swing
giving my poem a magical ring.

When Love Has Found You

Sometime in your life you'll know love has found you.
You won't know quite what to do.
You'll wander around with your head in the clouds
and you'll wonder if it can be true?
Love can be found in the craziest places
and turn you inside out.
It never seems to happen when you're looking for it.
It comes and leaves you in doubt.

What is this thing that's come over me,
this crazy feeling I've got?
You came along and stirred up my insides.
Now they're tied up in a knot.
What is this thing that won't settle down?
Is this what lovers call love?
The jitters, the aching, the downright shaking,
Is this what they're talking of?

I know I can't stop it. It's got to be true.
I can't keep my feet on the ground.

Mama, Mama You Can't Catch Me

Running wild across the sand
holding sea glass in her hand
yelling 'Mama see what I have found.'
She approaches yet I make no sound.
I'm lost with memories in my head
Times of laughter, times of dread.
She lays the sea glass by my side.
Still my thoughts are occupied
with happier times when we were three,
my husband and myself and she.

She has no memory of these things.
She runs in the sand and happily sings
'Mama, mama you can't catch me.'
I hide my tears so she won't see.
At the sound of her voice my heart skips a beat.
I rise up and feel the sand on my feet.
I run and chase her. I see his face,
mostly his features, mine just a trace.
I hear his voice.'Love her my dear.

The Weed

There was an old woman
that planted a garden.
And in the garden
there grew a weed.
The weed grew next to
a beautiful flower.

The flower had grown
from a tiny seed.
The weed was strong
and would not bend.
The wind did blow
and it did send

the seeds from the flower
into the air.
They circled around
and landed where
the weed was growing
next to the flower.

The Throes Of Love

Lost in the throes of love am I
and don't know how to pray.
Shall I pray for your sweet surrender
or pray that you should stay?
To keep you here and not let you go
sometimes seems too cruel.
But I am so in love with you
that now I play the fool.

For we've shared a life that went too fast,
just like a blink of an eye.
And to keep you here imprisoned
and not allow you to fly
is a fool's dilemma I know.
But love is a strange entrapment.
We hate to let it go.

But to watch your love whose life is hell
is a scene that should not be.
And so the throes of love for anyone

While I'm Alive

While I’m alive I want to live.
While I’m alive I want to give
All of myself to every minute
And feel the joy of being in it.
To see the sun and feel its heat,
To feel the earth under my feet,
To see the darkened skies at night
And all the stars within my sight
Brings me feelings beyond compare.

While I’m alive I want to share.
While I’m alive I want to be aware
Of why I’m here for this moment in time
And give of myself on my earthly climb
To those I love and those I meet
That will be the catalysts to help me defeat
All the lonely times I feel
That try their best to try and steal
The feelings I’ve grown to love.

Deja Vu

I've been here before. I know I have
but I can't remember when.
I can feel that strange sensation
that comes to me and then
as quiet as it came it went away,
leaving an empty spot.
It was a flash, A fleeting glimpse
of someplace that I forgot.

I've seen this before. I know not where?
My eyes remember the sight.
I can see the scene before me
that brings to me a light,
a flicker that leaves me all too soon,
not knowing from where it came.
Surely, I'm not imagining these things
and I know that I am sane.

I've heard this before. The sound repeats
and echoes in my brain.

Old Age

Old age just seems to creep up on you.
You look at the sky and it seems brand new.
You look at the snow that seems so white
and look at your hair and see the same sight.

Old age is a gift some don't receive.
The ones that reach it do believe
that life's a blessing on every day
for they've learned nothing can stand in their way.

They've been through aches. They've been through pains.
They welcome the sun and welcome the rains.
They revel in the sight of every flower.
They're happy with naps that come for an hour.

They realize there are sounds they can't quite hear
but they're pleased with the silence in their ear.
They realize their memory can fade away
but remember their youth like it was yesterday.

Felines

Look at the leopard. He is all peppered
with spots from his head to his toe.
His body is sleek and his eyes do shine
and he's ferocious when stalking his foe.

Look at the lion. He's no dandelion.
In the jungle he's King of the beasts.
He's courageous and strong and prowls like a cat
to find his food and then feasts.

Look at the tiger. He can spring higher
than most of the cats you'll see.
His coat is all tawny or sometimes stark white
with stripes that are black ebony.

Look at the cheetah. Be fast or he'll eat ya.
You won't have much time to escape.
He's faster than lightning with legs that are long.
It seems that he's always in shape.

The Mystery Of You

What is it that makes a person unique?
It's what we refer to as a mystique.
Ah! the mystery surrounding each one
is as different as the moon and the sun.

Take a good look at those you see.
They're all so different, a complexity
of all sizes and shapes that help to make
our lives so amazing, like the snowflake.

No two alike will ever exist,
not even twins and there's the twist.
Why would anyone want to be
like someone else is beyond me?

Being yourself has got to be
the most interesting thing that sets you free.
You don't have to try to be who you're not.
This is what so many people forgot.
