You'll Never be Alone

You'll never be alone. I'll be there for you.
'Cause when the space between us
seems like it's grown.
All you have to do is call me and say
'I need you. I miss you.'
and I'll be on my way.

The days you are alone
are sad for me too
because that space between us
is so far away that
all I have of you are memories I keep.
They haunt me. They taunt me
on every single day.

You know how your crying
makes me feel I'm dying.
What are we doing to ourselves
with all this goodbye-ing?
Hold your head up high

Heart Attack

The heart of our nation's had an attack.
Its beat has slowed right down.
No cardiac surgeon could ever fix
the problem that's brought it around

It' s been brewing for years like arrhythmia
with its on and off woes
that come and go with our nation throbbing
forgetting the promise of those

who told us we were the shining stars,
the land of the free and the brave.
While all along the heart of its people
becomes harder and harder to save.

The woes of this nation start from the top
where the money like blood circulates.
While the heart of our nation slowly bleeds
as the oil of the rich coagulates.

The Window

Little Sophie sat by her window
on every single day,
just looking for someone
with whom she could play.

The streets were full of people
but none of them she knew.
She waved at them as they went by
and some of them waved too.

But they were busy people
going everywhere.
None of them had time for play,
no time to spare.

Her sisters and her brother
all went to school.
She could not go. She was only four
and that was against the rule.

Where Is The Peace?

Where is the peace we all do need?
Has it been choked by evil deed?
Is it still there underneath the sky
where all winged creatures continue to fly?
It's hard to find but we pursue
and try to fathom where it flew.

Where does it dwell amongst all men?
Has it been strangled by hands that can
never seem to let go their hold
in search of power, greed and gold?
In defense of peace there's always war
that kills all we are searching for.

Peace is a dream that's too far away.
It's now just a word that people say.
Its meaning has been lost in sorrow.
It's never today, always tomorrow.
And tomorrow's an ambiguous place,
never found in our time and space.

The Lesson

How did it start?
How does it end?
No one can tell you that, my friend.
We take life for granted
and move right along,
happy, content and singing a song.
Then pow! something hits you
on top of your head.
'Where did it come from? '
That's what is said.

Here comes the lesson that opens your eyes.
It surfaces quickly to your surprise.
You become aware of how life works.
Reality hits.
Insecurity lurks.
It wakes you up and shakes you up.
Prayers take over and fill your cup.
You either succumb or rise to the occasion.
You face it squarely or try evasion

America, My America

America, my America land of liberty,
what can you say has happened to thee?
Can you still say with pride
just how you feel?
Or is the pride over
can you hear the eagle's squeal?

You fought hard for freedom
but you stole freedom too.
You stole it from the red man
many years ago.
You stole it from the black man
whose back was bent down low.

Your sons and daughters of which I am one
are wondering now where's the sun?
It still shines, but not quite as bright.
The Lady in the harbor cries silently in the night.

I think you were an experiment

Letting Go

Can I fall in love again?
God only knows.
'Cause all I ever do you know
is remember how we were.
Those small little things that made us tick
and kept our hearts astir
are still alive inside of me,
all else became a blur.

But loneliness has crept right in
and darkened every day.
And even all acceptance
can't take my pain away.
What will I do?
Where will I turn?
What would you have me do?
Find someone to heal my heart
to help me make it through?

Can I start all over again?

The Color Of Rose

Oh if the world were all rosy colored,
not from the blood stains of men,
The picture presented would grace the world
with beauty and warmth again.

But fighting persists and the canvas we see
is one that's splattered and torn
beyond any mending or blending in sight
as the memory of what was, we mourn.

We see a facade before us and think
surely the scene will come back
where we can look at a rosy world,
one not so smoky and black.

But whom are we fooling?
Only ourselves.
The fools who are using the brush
don't have a vision of what beauty is.
The brains in their heads like mush.

Pictures In My Mind

Sweet nighttime pictures in my mind
have made it hard to sleep.
Can't I change them into dreams,
the kind I want to keep?

They've got me wide-awake in bed
wondering why they're here?
I should be sleeping soundlessly
but they just won't disappear.

Pictures of dancing and sweet romancing,
things that are no longer around,
I need to stop these pictures
and keep my feet on the ground.

Pictures of moonbeams shining
with a glow that warms my heart,
I close my eyes and I see you
and now my eyes start to smart.

White And Black

He painted a picture all white and black
because in his life all color did he lack.
He lacked the yellow of the sun each day
for the sun had never come his way.
He lacked the green of fresh green grass
for the cement of the city he couldn't get past.
He lacked the blue of the sky above
for no one had ever showed him love.
He lacked the red that the rose did give
for no roses grew where he did live.
He lacked all color from his sight.
All he knew was black and white.

The picture he painted could never tell
of how his life was a living hell.
He'd lost his sight when he was three
and the colors were a lost memory.
His sole memory was of dark and light,
night being dark, day being white.
And now he created art to define
