5. Priceless
Chopping up walnuts whipping up cream
Grating fine chocolate that tastes like a dream
Out from the oven all cakes raised well
Looking delicious and what a great smell
Onto a rack place the sponges to cool
Watching with interest whilst perched on a stool
Melting more chocolate to use as a topping
Take all the walnuts spent so much time chopping
Lifting cooled bottom cake onto a tray
Thickly whipped cream spread as thick as you may
Then placed the top sponge on cream like a hat
Sharp eyes watched cream they belonged to our cat
Hot melted chocolate now drizzled on top
Getting quite thick we will soon have to stop
Sprinkle the nuts into chocolate now setting
Along with the grated choc we’re not forgetting

5. Friends
I remember in the fifties we didn’t have a lot
We were always pleased with everything we had
I remember how we utilised the things that we had got
Making things we knew would make each other glad
I remember sticks of rhubarb were red but mainly green
Tasting sour it would shrivel up your face
I remember hide & seek we tried hard not to be seen
Or running fast and calling it a race
I remember playing football in the middle of the road
Using jackets as a makeshift sort of goal
I remember by the pond on the day we found a toad
Where the tadpoles swam around it in a shoal
I remember in the summer playing out till it was dark
Made up games from almost anything we found
I remember bits of wood that we took down to the park
Wickets, bats a ball we had a cricket ground

5. Memories of Good Grub
I remember in the fifties we had dripping on our bread
Sprinkled well with salt for extra taste
I remember black pork jelly from the bottom of the dish
Was a relish to be savoured not to waste?
I remember fetching winkles always sold to us in pints
That took ages to get out with just a pin
I remember all the winkle shell looked like a load of snails
And the juicy ones that dribbled down your chin
I remember lumpy porridge milk and sugar on the top
Setting hard enough to cut yourself a slice
I remember having nightmares after having two large bowls
To describe it one would never call it nice
I remember red polony in its plastic sort of skin
Tried and tried our best but couldn’t make it spread
I remember trays of faggots from the butchers for our tea
Though some folks called them savoury ducks instead

5. The Chalet
I remember in the fifties in a chalet by the sea
Made of timber looking rather like a shed
I remember its position in tall grasses under tree
Casting shadows through the window by my bed
I remember it was raining on the felt roof rather weak
Sitting round an oil clothed table playing whist
I remember finding buckets catching water as it leak
Placing all the problems found upon a list
I remember fighting brothers for the bunk upon the top
Made of planks rough sawn with stuck out rusty nails
I remember for a fire there were sticks we had to chop
Wet through and home too big brown juicy snails
I remember calor gas and the old style mantle lamp
Always flickered with a most distinctive smell
I remember all the bedding was fusty and rather damp
All the spiders made my little sister yell

5. School Dinners
I remember in the fifties, I stayed for my school dinners
At six sided tables, with six chairs to match
I remember on walls, having all the art class winners
Whilst the dinner ladies served our food by batch
I remember lots of water, in a very large glass jug
With a glass for every diner in its place
I remember as I poured, it would give out a sudden glug
Causing droplets that would often hit your face
I remember smelly cabbage, with lots of lumpy mash
A tray sliced up with equal bits of pie
I remember thick brown gravy, it landed with a splash
That could blind you if it got you in the eye
I remember all the puddings, with custard steaming hot
You could only have if finishing your greens
I remember all the groaning as we finished off the lot
And the sickly taste from piles of butter beans

5. Fashion
I remember in the sixties funky clothes were all the rage
We wore our wide bell-bottoms with such pride
I remember beige/brown herringbone an itchy woollen cloth
Caused rashes on our legs we tried to hide
I remember soaking water up a gallon to each leg
As the bags took on a shower full of rain
I remember just how long they were dragging on the ground
Fraying edges showing signs of wear again
I remember one particular pair a kind of mustard yellow
The legs of which kept catching in the car
I remember as I closed the door a leg end dangling out
Collecting oil from hinges with some tar
I remember trying to free myself once trapped within the door
Like a prisoner in the clothing that I wore
I remember pulling really hard until the trousers tore
When the stitching couldn’t take it any more

7. Childhood
It was hard when I tried to think back
To remember the bad and the good
Reliving old memories I thought I’d forgot
Way back in my early childhood
My brain started sorting out data
So much how did one childhood cope?
I lived for today’s not tomorrow’s
All new days were full of fresh hope
My winters had snow covered pathways
So deep my poor frost bitten toes
With cotton wool coatings on rooftops
Where long slender icicles froze
In springtime’s the weather was milder
Like frolicking lambs we would play
Hide and seek, football or cricket
Would keep us amused through the day

5. Capital Trip
I remember in the fifties, as we stood there in the rain
On the platform where a porter pulled a trolley
I remember as we waited for the early morning train
Getting soaking wet we wished we’d took a brolly
I remember grubby paint on the bridge across the track
Dark blue signs that showed us all the stations name
I remember postmen rushing with letters in a sack
That they put down in the puddles what a shame
I remember an announcement the ping-pong of a bell
Telling passengers the train was nearly there
I remember those vibrations on my feet so I could tell
Like the others to the distance I should stare
I remember steam clouds rising above a smoking stack
As it thundered down the track towards our stop
I remember stationmaster’s gold braid upon his hat
Calling all the first class forward to the top

5. The Baker
I remember in the fifties the baker and his van
He brought many treats for everyone to buy
I remember how he took his time to let you have a look
And pointed out the new lines we should try
I remember all the sliced bread came in paper with a wax
As the unsliced just sat there all crusty bare
I remember all the bread trays with co-op on the side
Holding fresh cream cakes for all of us to share
I remember all the neighbours with kids queued in the street
All the women with their rollers under scarf
I remember paisley pinny’s full of things that they had bought
And the ladies who liked butter in a half
I remember he came twice a week the first call was on tick
He listed everything within a book
I remember at the weekend when he came around again
We had more and settled up for what we’d took

5. Snow Fun
I remember in the fifties when the snow fell very quick
Like big cornflakes crunchy crisp and sparkling white
I remember ground was frozen and it settled very thick
It kept falling down like sheets throughout the night
I remember in the morning as we opened our front door
To a solid wall of snow that filled the frame
I remember how we shouted when it fell upon the floor
Then we tried the back to find that just the same
I remember pipes were frozen no more water solid ice
Not a dropp it was as dry as it could be
I remember all the kids thought the snow was very nice
And our parents making plans to get us free
I remember how the snow fell and dad rushing at the door
Diving forward like a badger in fine fettle
I remember fresh white snow makes a lovely cup of tea
When you scoop it up and boil it in the kettle
