5. To Boot

Another cold crisp Sunday morn
A frost and cool breeze chill
Sky’s orange glow brings in the dawn
To crown far distant hill

My car with icy coating
Needs scraping prior to load
Today will be a short trip
Just three miles down the main road

By six o’clock the packing’s done
The screen now fully clear
I check out all my loading
And put car into gear

The deadline fast advancing
Past seven would be late
It’s not a game for chancing
Pitch seals a booter’s fate

5. Merry Old England

Shining armour tunics bright
A table large and round
Swords pointing to its centre
Where Arthur’s knights be found

Each had pledged allegiance
That will never be forgot
To uphold the rights of justice
In this place called Camelot

Each fought in many battles
You’d often hear them call
We fight in the name of King Arthur
For right and with justice for all

Tyrants they had vanquished
Dragons had been slain
Damsels in their ivory towers
Saved time and time again

5. Sports Day

I remember our school sports day
Where we all went out to race
I remember jumping in a sack
And falling on my face

I remember someone calling out
Next race is starting soon
I remember running down the field
With a stupid egg and spoon

I remember throwing beanbags
At a circle on the floor
I remember not being very good
But going back for more

I remember coloured sashes
And I wore the colour green
I remember what we won that day
Wasn’t easy to be seen

5. A New School

I remember my first days at school
How the building seemed so big
I remember where I hung my coat
By the picture of a pig

I remember our headmistress
Her face was sprouting hair
I remember I was always told
Not to look it’s rude to stare

I remember all the screaming
From the children how they cried
I remember double swinging doors
That seemed so very wide

I remember in the sandpit
Pouring water-making slush
I remember teacher telling us
Let’s have a little hush

5. The Cat

The cat shot over the sleeping dog
And caught it with his paw
The cat shot over the table
Dog chased him through the door

The cat shot over the TV
And Landed in a chair
The cat shot over the ceiling light
Springs shot him through the air

The cat shot over the mirror
A cat gave him a fright
The cat shot over his image
But didn’t want to fight

The cat shot over the fireplace
Burnt tail on red hot coal
The cat shot over the hearthrug
Like a firework on a roll

5. New Blazer

I remember my new blazer
Looking sharp in royal blue
I remember just how smart I felt
A school badge sewn on too

I remember how I brushed it down
Then hung it on a rail
I remember always wearing it
For exams I didn’t fail

I remember my friend Michael
Said my blazer was too bright
I remember how he called me names
Until we had a fight

I remember I was winning
As we rolled upon the ground
I remember losing all my change
Some other boy now found

5. Push Biking

I remember red-hot summers
Went for bike rides near the Trent
I remember making bikes from bits
From mates of ours we’d lent

I remember big jam butties
We took with us and pop
I remember wonkey leather seats
No brakes to help us stop

I remember my mum saying
Make sure you take a coat
I remember swigging from the pop
And watching breadcrumbs float

I remember when we got there
On the Trent bank we would rest
I remember favourite sweet shops
Where the ice creams tasted best

5. Leg-less

My wobbly legs don’t take me far
They buckle with the strain
I end up kneeling on the ground
And I can’t get up again

A little frail old lady
Tries to help me to my feet
Someone from a nearby shop
Rushes forward with a seat

Between the well intended
I’m sat there in the mall
They collect up all my shopping
That scattered in the fall

From the shoe shop some-ones coming
With a cup of hot sweet tea
Drink it up its good for shock
They seem more shocked than me

5. What a Christmas

Outside the snow was falling
All lights were on the tree
The sherry and the mince pies out
For Santa not for me

A roaring fire was crackling
The Yule log burned so bright
Four stockings from the mantle hung
All named to get things right

Requests were duly noted
From letters kids had written
Young Joey wanted action man
A doll left Sally smitten

Roller blades with flashing lights
For Bobbies faster mile
A smart new coat with fur on top
Take’s Milly out in style

5. Caring

Sleep well rest your weary head
In slumbers be you still
Strength you always seem to find
Whilst others keep their fill

You always find a welcome smile
For others when in need
Then offer of yourself a while
While others let you lead

Worn out from all your labours
From shopping for the old
Cleaned windows for your neighbour
Made soup to stave off cold

Your selfless deeds without reward
So often seem unfair
From one whom most can ill afford
Work watched but no one shared
