Leah

They defied the gods and earned their wrath.
Waters washed over their land
sinking it miles beneath the sea
to languish for centuries in myth and mystery.
Then emerged a mysterious woman
I found floundering near the shore.
She said her name was Leah
and claimed she was from a land
that sunk centuries ago
by the gods deep beneath the sea.
As the days progressed from the time,
I found her
this is the story she related to me.

My city is one of many
and my people are very old.
We learnt a long time ago
the key to immortality.
Ours is but a simple life
farming fish and seaweed

Mysteries In My Life

When I was born,
God gave me two gifts.
One was the talent to write
which I do prolifically
not for profit or gain,
but just to entertain
and make people think
and smile occasionally.

The other gift God gave to me
is far more mysterious
and something I cannot fully understand.
I see and hear things
I cannot readily explain.
Not all what I see and hear
can always be seen or heard by others.

There are exceptions
when I witness them not alone
and then they are as mystified as I am.

No

Everyone wants a part of you
no matter whom you are
and most want your money.
They plague you with emails, telephone calls
or persistently knock on your door.
The more you say no,
the more they persist anyway
until you get rude and send them on their way.

Some churches send out callers
saying they’ll show you to the light.
I just tell them I’m a Preacher, I have my own church
and that gets rid of them.
I am not lying; I am a pretend Preacher with my own church.

Then comes the charities
wanting you to give money
for this and that.
My answer is always no
and tell them to see the government

Halloween Quartet No 1 Graveyard Special

Standing at the bus stop waiting,
when the stranger asked.
“Has anyone seen the Graveyard Special?
I hope I haven’t missed it
or they won’t let me out next year.”
I shook my head and said. “Sorry, no.”
The stranger turned to me.
He wore a tuxedo, bow tie and patent polished shoes.
He looked like a dancer
and an odd smell rose around him
that of rotting decay.
“Been a nice night, hasn’t it.”
“Yes, but they forecast rain.”
“Been out with your girlfriend
and now catching the last bus home? ”
“No, I haven’t got one.”
A cloud passed across the moon
and the strangers face became partially visible
under the pale light of the moon.
A pale face with a sullen look

I feel Like A Protesting Mood Today

I feel like a protesting mood today. Consecutive Governments all over the world are eroding our rights away one by one. We must not do this and we must not do that.

A good case in point is the smoking ban, well that has just got way out of hand. I agree no smoking in places where we eat, but now the idiots wants to ban you smoking in your own car! Now that is stretching it a bit too far. It makes you wonder what part of cloud cuckoo land their ideas come from.

Now I remember and it’s not that long ago, doctors encouraged you to smoke to calm your nerves. Now the same doctors are saying it is bad for you. However, it is all right for a group of them to plant a dirty bomb. Am I going mad or is there a double standard here? On the other hand, is it that they don’t have enough patients that they have to go out and create a few?

Then there are the Hospitals and doctors saying we will refuse to treat anyone that smokes. Hang on a minute, you will treat an alcoholic, which is self-infliction, a drug addict another self-infliction. Come on, a lot of you told us to smoke in the first place. Then the other day another doctor was saying that smoking actually help keep the airway clear. Am I missing something here?

Now I wonder what the Government would do if we all said there would be no drinking alcohol in any government building anywhere. Their Christmas parties would have to be held outside with Jack Frost. The point is if they couldn’t drink they might not fall asleep on the front bench, and we might get a few good laws that would do us all some good. Lets all vote in taking their rights away, just like they have been doing to ours. I’ve had enough of protesting to day. Thank you for listening, now I’m going away to write some pretty poetry.

The Hogarth Experiment Part 2

The fire raged out of control
and into the night.
Its glow coloured the sky.
Chemicals exploded
as they warmed to boiling point.
Hogarth’s assistant Adam Wright
pulled Hogarth from the flames
and across the lawn.
The clanging of bells
from the Fire Brigade and Ambulance
were soon to be heard.
Hogarth was rushed to hospital
where he would stay for just over a month.
His makeshift laboratory laid
a charred skeleton on his return.
All his work was gone,
destroyed in the fire.
He was a broken man.
He became a recluse in his home.
His hair turned white overnight.

Worker

Eight or more hours you work everyday,
to earn your weekly wage, opening it,
look in disgust with what you made.
Therefore, off on strike you go, to cause a little fuss.
The PM beams a fat face,
from your television screen,
say you must go back to work,
and live within your means.
You look at him angrily,
saying, “you silly fool.
I’d be better clothed and fed
if I lived off the dole.”

It is all right for him,
with his thousands a year,
but what about us poor workers
on forty pound a week,
whose monies gone,
before we even, see it.
That does not tweak.

Diminished Responsibility

Makeup cannot hide the bruising,
or the swollen eye.
Sunglasses only make people,
what you’re trying to hide.
You seem so defiant,
only a few know the truth.
About the coward and bully,
who has a hold on you.

He looks as if he wouldn’t hurt a fly,
and smiles with a friendly face.
You’d take him as a regular nice guy,
but with in the four walls,
of a place you call a home,
he flies into a jealous rage.
Accuses you of this and that,
and then grabs the baseball bat.

His temper with in doors,
rages out of control.

An Invitation To Tea (A Dark Comedy) Part 1

Charles Latimer visited the corner shop run by the Forbes sisters Charlotte and Grace almost every day. He could have collected his groceries in one visit, but the short intercourse of words they exchanged broke the emptiness in his life. As he entered the shop, the tiny bell above the door chimed.

Grace Forbes stood behind the counter. “Good morning Mr Latimer, ” she said. “What would you like today? ”

Good morning, Grace. I’ve written out a small list. My needs are not many as you know.” He replied and smiled.

“I’m surprised you never married. You would have made some lucky woman a wonderful husband.”

Charles Latimer felt his cheeks warm. “Would it be all right to leave the list and pick up my groceries later? ”

“Of course. Why, have you got a date with someone? ”

“In a manner of speaking. I feed the pigeons in the park every morning about this time. I must be going now.”

“We’ll have your groceries ready by the time you get back.”

“Thank you, ” he said, turned, and left.

Grace watched him leave. A sad unpretentious man whose clothes always seemed a size too large.

Eve

Detdicated to Eve Croft
May she Rest In Peace

It was over forty years ago
when I first met her.
I had barely left my teens.
She was older than me;
in fact, she was a friend’s mother.
Divorce had left her lonely
with three sons to bring up.
Life was not easy,
not much time to herself.
Slowly after meeting her,
a friendship between us grew.

To make her life sustainable
I took her out
from time to time.
We held hands at the pictures
