A Death in the Woods

The road fell out of the mountains
Into a field that spread toward the horizon,
Dark trees rose slowly,
Climb toward the sunset.

Presence to the traveler's eye
On road reach the crest of hill
Drop to the small river,
Climb down the sunset.

The horses slosh through,
The wagon wheel bolts below
Cross to the entrance of the forest
Known simply as Blackbird.

He escaped two days before,
His partner decides to give in
And turns to head toward sheriff
A bullet race through his head.
